Baldwin County High Teacher and Longtime Coach Jerry Wright Remembered as “A Calling”

Bay Minette is mourning the loss of a longtime Baldwin County High School teacher and coach whose influence on students and athletes spanned decades. Jerry Wright, 58, died last week after a short but serious illness, leaving behind a legacy that current staff and former players say went far beyond the classroom or the ball field.

Flags at Baldwin County High School flew at half-staff this week, and a black ribbon was placed on the school’s front door in his honor. Principal Johnny Cabaniss said Wright had called in sick just days before his death, and the news that followed came as a shock to the school community.

Colleagues Reflect on a Career Cut Short by Illness

“[It was] truly more than just a job for him. It was a calling,” Cabaniss said of Wright’s decades in education and athletics. “He’s only been out, basically, about five days. But it was sudden.”

Baldwin County Administrator Don Blanchard, who described his relationship with Wright as being like brothers, said Wright had previously been treated for skin cancer, and that the disease returned aggressively in his final months.

“You always think that there’s a chance that with modern medicine you can get better,” Blanchard said. “It just got a hold of him and wouldn’t let go.”

Building Baldwin County’s Baseball Program

Though Wright stepped away from active coaching duties a couple of years ago, his connection to the athletic program and to the students he mentored never faded. Baseball coach Pete Bezeredi, who worked alongside Wright for years, said his absence leaves a void that will be difficult to fill.

“It’s very upsetting because we’re losing a great friend and a mentor,” Bezeredi said.

Inside the school’s tradition room, shelves lined with trophies and memorabilia tell the story of a program Wright helped build from the ground up. “Ninety-five percent of the stuff you see in here — the tradition that he established of greatness here in our baseball program — can be attributed to him,” Bezeredi said.

As head baseball coach at Baldwin County High, Wright led the Tigers to seven area championships and eleven playoff appearances over the course of his career. He was chosen to coach in the East-West All-Star Game ten times, was named area coach of the year on eight occasions, and was inducted into three separate coaching and athletic halls of fame in recognition of his contributions to the sport.

A Final Farewell to a Beloved Coach

“We’re going to miss him, but he left a big mark behind,” Bezeredi said. “It’s a mark that will never be forgotten.”

Visitation for Jerry Wright is scheduled for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Bay Minette First Baptist Church, with a funeral service to follow at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the same location.
