The documentary “Vigilante Vigilante” arrives at the Crescent Theater for a week-long run from September 30 through October 6, examining a strange corner of the battle over public walls: the anti-graffiti vigilantes.
The film introduces a new breed of self-appointed crime-fighter — blight warriors who stop at nothing to scrub their neighborhoods of street art, stickers, tags and posters. But the documentary’s twist is that several of these crusaders have become the very menace they set out to eliminate, illegally and destructively painting over other people’s property in their zeal.
Two filmmakers set out to expose the mysterious paint-over artists and end up discovering a battle of expression that stretches from city streets to academia, raising questions about who owns the visual landscape of a neighborhood.
Screenings run daily at the Crescent Theater on Dauphin Street in downtown Mobile through October 6.
