Gulf Shores Dolphins Shut Out Spanish Fort 36-0, Clinch 5A Region 1 Title
Gulf Shores held Spanish Fort to 10 total yards in a 36-0 road win, moving to 8-0 and clinching the Class 5A Region 1 title behind three touchdown passes from Major Hudspeth.
SPANISH FORT, Ala. — The Gulf Shores Dolphins held Spanish Fort to 10 total yards and rolled to a 36-0 road victory on Friday, Oct. 16, improving to 8-0 and clinching the Class 5A Region 1 championship. The Dolphins’ defense allowed the Toros just 6 rushing yards and 4 passing yards for the entire game.
Quarterback Major Hudspeth completed 14 of 17 passes for 161 yards and three touchdowns, and West Virginia commit Carter Davis caught two of those scoring passes, including a 65-yard catch-and-run, as Gulf Shores stayed perfect on the season.
A Defensive Performance for the Record Books
Defense was the story across the area this week. On Thursday night at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Vigor held Class 4A No. 1-ranked Williamson to 41 yards in a 12-0 win. One night later, Gulf Shores topped that, limiting Spanish Fort to 10 yards of total offense.
The Dolphins’ swarming, aggressive defense set the tone from the opening series and never let up until the final horn. Spanish Fort could not find room on the ground or through the air, and Gulf Shores consistently won the battle at the line of scrimmage.
Put in perspective, Spanish Fort’s 10 yards of offense over four quarters amounted to the distance needed for a single first down. The Toros’ 4 passing yards and 6 rushing yards left them with no sustained drives against a unit that dominated from start to finish.
Gulf Shores head coach Mark Hudspeth said his defense is still growing, even after a performance like this one.
“We’re evolving,” Hudspeth said. “And we know it’s hard to run the ball against us and our defensive run game is really, really strong. And we don’t give up big plays and these guys are physical, they’re tough and they’re playing together right now.”
Gulf Shores Clinches Class 5A Region 1
The victory improved Gulf Shores to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in Class 5A Region 1, wrapping up the region title with a game to spare. The Dolphins have been ranked in the top three in Class 5A throughout the season and have backed that up with one of the area’s most complete teams.
Because the region crown is already secured, the Dolphins can approach their final two regular-season games focused on improvement rather than standings. Both of those games will be played at home in Gulf Shores.
The win also came on the road against a Spanish Fort team that entered the night with just one loss. Gulf Shores answered every question, dominating on defense and finishing drives on offense whenever it reached the red zone.
Hudspeth said the Dolphins needed time to settle in after a sloppy start.
“We had some self-inflicted penalties and things that really slowed us down (early),” Hudspeth said. “And once we settled down a little bit, I thought we’d end up playing really well offensively and then obviously defensively here tonight. I thought we played as good as you can play defensively. And got a few things in special teams.
“We’ve just gotta keep getting better one game at a time. We’ll be able to identify a lot of things that we’ve got to get better at after watching this tape next week.”
How the Dolphins Built a 23-0 Halftime Lead
Gulf Shores struck first late in the first quarter. Major Hudspeth threw a short pass to Davis, and the speedster turned it into a 65-yard touchdown, racing down the left sideline and away from the Spanish Fort defense.
Edgar McKee added a 29-yard field goal to extend the lead. After a short Spanish Fort punt gave the Dolphins good field position, Elijah Malone scored on a 3-yard run to make it 16-0.
The defense then created a scoring chance of its own before halftime. Karter Williams recovered a fumble at the Toros’ 47-yard line, and Gulf Shores turned the takeaway into points when Hudspeth found Davis again, this time on a 7-yard touchdown pass, for a 23-0 lead at the break.
Second-Half Scores Bring a Running Clock
The Dolphins kept pushing in the third quarter. Janoy Ferguson scored on a 4-yard run, and Hudspeth later threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Brayden Lawson to make it 36-0.
With the margin that wide, the fourth quarter was played with a running clock. Gulf Shores’ defense finished the job, keeping the Toros off the scoreboard and holding them to single-digit yardage in both rushing and passing.
Hudspeth’s efficient night — 14 completions on 17 attempts — included two touchdown passes to Davis and one to Lawson, while the ground game contributed touchdowns from Malone and Ferguson.
Spanish Fort Faces a Big Region Game Next
Spanish Fort fell to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the region, leaving the Toros tied with Saraland for second place in the Class 5A Region 1 standings. That sets up a key matchup when Spanish Fort hosts Saraland on Friday, Oct. 23, in a meeting of the two teams currently tied for second.
The Toros will then close the regular season with a non-region game against St. Paul’s.
Spanish Fort head coach Chase Smith took responsibility for his offense’s struggles against the Gulf Shores defense.
“It starts with me, ends with me,” Smith said. “I’ve got to do a better job. This Gulf Shores ball team, they did a great job.”
