Friday night rearranged the top of the local high school football landscape, and Orange Beach supplied the play that decided the closest of it.
The Makos beat Vigor 21-19, defending a two-point conversion attempt that would have tied the game. Down the beach highway on the same night, Gulf Shores stunned Saraland 34-24, and Mobile Christian edged Cottage Hill Christian 12-7 on a touchdown in the final minute.
It was, by any measure, a night of upsets in Mobile County-Baldwin County prep football.
Orange Beach 21, Vigor 19
Vigor arrived with substantial pedigree. The Wolves were ranked No. 2 in the Alabama Sports Writers Association poll for their classification and reached the state title game a year ago. They had allowed only 10 points total across their first two games.
Orange Beach scored 21 on them.
The Makos moved to 3-0 with the win and have now scored 101 points across three games while allowing just 33. Vigor fell to 2-1.
The finish came down to a single defensive stand. Orange Beach defended a two-point conversion that would have tied the game, and the Makos held on for a two-point win.
Two-point conversions in that situation are close to a coin flip, and defending one requires a defense to execute a single snap correctly with no margin. Orange Beach did.
The result also carries weight beyond bragging rights: it was a region game, which makes the win worth more than its place in the standings suggests.
Gulf Shores 34, Saraland 24
Gulf Shores handed Saraland its first home regular-season loss since Oct. 2, 2020, when Spanish Fort last accomplished it — ending a 41-game home winning streak.
The Dolphins trailed 24-14 entering the fourth quarter and outscored the Spartans 20-0 the rest of the way.
Elijah Malone led the way, scoring on touchdown runs of 2 and 77 yards. He also blocked a Saraland field goal attempt that teammate Joc Prince recovered and returned 75 yards for a touchdown.
Gulf Shores moved to 3-0. Saraland, which claimed the No. 1 ranking in its classification this week and has played in the state title game each of the past four seasons, dropped to 1-1.
Mobile Christian 12, Cottage Hill Christian 7
Israel Benard’s 48-yard touchdown pass to J.T. Redd with 34.7 seconds remaining lifted the visiting Leopards past the No. 3 Warriors.
Benard finished 8 of 14 for 90 yards, and Tristan Aragon added a touchdown run on a soggy field for Mobile Christian, which improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in Class A Region 1.
The win carried emotional weight beyond the scoreboard. Leopards offensive lineman Ryder Barstow’s father died the day before the game.
“It comes down to one play,” Mobile Christian coach Charles Lawson said. “We do a lot of two-minute stuff and I challenged those guys. They stepped up as leaders and toward the end of the game they made it happen for us.”
Cottage Hill Christian fell to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in region play. Shamar Toodle went 7 of 16 for 92 yards and a touchdown, and Aaron Ward had four receptions for 60 yards and a score.
“It’s tough losing when the defense played so hard,” Warriors coach Carvel Jones said. “But our kids have been through way worse than this. They’re resilient; they’ll bounce back.”
Elsewhere: LeFlore Keeps Rolling
LeFlore continued its strong start, shutting out Satsuma 38-0. The Rattlers host Orange Beach next week, which sets up a meeting between two teams that have both looked considerably better than expected through three weeks.
UMS-Wright beat St. Michael 17-13 in a game the Cardinals played without starting quarterback Gunner Rivers, who was injured in St. Michael’s opener.

A Shift Worth Noting
For years, Mobile County programs have held a firm grip on local high school football supremacy. Friday night complicated that considerably.
Two Baldwin County coastal programs beat two of Mobile County’s most formidable teams on the same evening, both in region play, both in games decided in the fourth quarter. Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are each 3-0 and have now proven they can win late against opponents with deeper postseason resumes.
Whether one Friday night constitutes a genuine shift in the regional balance of power or an unusually eventful week will be settled over the next two months. What is not in dispute is that the coastal programs earned it in the fourth quarter rather than backing into it.
