Saraland finds itself in familiar territory this week, as the Spartans jumped one spot to No. 1 in the Alabama Sports Writers Association Class 5A prep football poll.
Saraland had held the No. 2 spot the first two weeks before moving past previous No. 1 Clay-Chalkville — and it happened during an off week.
Rising Without Playing
Moving to the top of a poll on a bye is a reminder of what a voter poll actually measures. With no new result of its own, Saraland’s climb reflects how voters assessed Clay-Chalkville’s week alongside the body of work the Spartans had already assembled.
It also means Saraland enters its next game carrying the target that comes with a No. 1 ranking, having done nothing on the field to earn it that week.
Three Area Teams at No. 1
The move gives the local area three top-ranked teams: Saraland in Class 5A, Williamson in Class 4A and Bayside Academy in Private Class A.
The area is also represented by a pair of No. 2 teams — Vigor in Class 4A and McGill-Toolen in Private Class AA.
Two Mobile County programs holding the top two spots in Class 4A, as Williamson and Vigor do, is an unusual concentration and speaks to the depth of football in the county.
Sixteen Teams Ranked or Receiving Votes
A total of 16 teams from the Mobile County-Baldwin County area are either ranked or received votes in this week’s poll.
All five area teams in Private Class AA, Region 1 are ranked or received votes. McGill-Toolen is No. 2 and St. Michael is No. 3, while UMS-Wright, St. Paul’s and Faith Academy all received votes.
The private school rankings feature only a top five plus teams receiving votes, since there are fewer teams than in the public school classifications, which carry a top 10 and a receiving-votes list. That structural difference makes an entire region appearing in the private school poll a genuinely notable result.
Class by Class
In Class 6A, Daphne received votes but is not in the top 10. Gulf Shores received votes in the Class 5A poll.
In Class 4A, Citronelle’s 2-0 start earned the Wildcats a No. 9 ranking, while Orange Beach and Satsuma received votes.
In Private Class A, Cottage Hill Christian is ranked No. 4 and Mobile Christian received votes.
The Statewide Picture
Beyond the local teams, this week’s top-ranked teams include Thompson in Class 6A, Plainview in 3A, Fyffe in 2A, Maplesville in 1A and Patrician Academy in the Alabama Independent School Association.
What It Adds Up To
Sixteen area teams in the poll across every classification — public and private, large and small — is a strong showing for a two-county region three weeks into the season.
The rankings will be tested quickly. Saraland’s next opponent is Gulf Shores, itself receiving votes in Class 5A, which puts a ranked-versus-receiving-votes matchup on the local schedule.
