HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — South Alabama at Marshall is the Sun Belt Conference matchup on the Tuesday night menu, as the Jaguars put their unbeaten league record and one of the most explosive offenses in the conference on the line against a Thundering Herd team searching for its first conference victory of the season.

Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. Central on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026, at Joan C. Edwards Stadium. South Alabama arrives at 4-2 overall and 2-0 in Sun Belt play, while Marshall sits at 3-3 overall and 0-2 against conference opponents. For the Jaguars, the trip marks a second consecutive game away from Mobile and a chance to keep pace in the race for the Sun Belt West Division title.

The programs have met only one time. That game, played in Mobile in 2023, ended in a 28-0 South Alabama shutout. Tuesday’s meeting will be the first time the series has moved to Huntington.

How Both Teams Arrive

South Alabama has had nearly two weeks to prepare. The Jaguars last played on Thursday, Oct. 8, when they outlasted Arkansas State 56-49 in a game that featured plenty of offense and more defensive drama than the coaching staff would have liked.

Marshall, meanwhile, is coming off a frustrating 27-20 loss to Coastal Carolina on Saturday, Oct. 10. That result dropped the Thundering Herd to .500 overall and left them still looking for a breakthrough in conference play.

The contrast in momentum is notable. South Alabama has won games by outscoring opponents, while Marshall has struggled to find consistency, particularly under center. Both trends will be tested on Tuesday night.

Key Matchup: Jaguars Receivers vs. Marshall’s Secondary

If there is one area where South Alabama appears to hold a clear edge, it is in the passing game. The Jaguars feature two of the most dangerous deep threats in the Sun Belt in wide receivers Anthony Eager and Brendan Jenkins.

Eager has been the league’s most explosive pass catcher on a per-play basis, averaging 27.7 yards per reception, the best mark in the conference. Jenkins is not far behind, averaging 16.9 yards per catch, which ranks sixth in the Sun Belt. Together, they give South Alabama the ability to flip field position or put points on the board with a single throw.

That is a troubling prospect for a Marshall defense that has had difficulty slowing opposing passing attacks. The Thundering Herd are allowing 263.5 passing yards per game, which ranks 12th among the 14 teams in the Sun Belt. Marshall has also surrendered 16 touchdown passes, the most in the league, while intercepting only three passes, the second-lowest total in the conference.

Those numbers suggest Marshall’s secondary will be under pressure all evening. If the Thundering Herd cannot limit big plays down the field, South Alabama’s receivers could once again be the difference.

Storyline: The Quarterback Battle

One of the most intriguing questions heading into the game is which quarterback will make the bigger impact.

Marshall’s Carlos Del Rio-Wilson entered the season with high expectations after being named the preseason Sun Belt Player of the Year. His season has not gone according to plan. Del Rio-Wilson has been inconsistent, and in the loss to Coastal Carolina he committed four turnovers before being replaced by Zion Turner in the second half. How Marshall handles the quarterback position, and how Del Rio-Wilson responds if he gets the start, will be worth watching from the opening possession.

On the other sideline, South Alabama’s Jared Hollins has given the Jaguars a spark since replacing Bishop Davenport as the starter. South Alabama is 3-1 with Hollins taking the first snap. He is not a high-volume passer, but he has been remarkably efficient when he does throw, leading the Sun Belt with an average of 9.2 yards per pass attempt. That efficiency pairs naturally with the big-play ability of Eager and Jenkins.

With Hollins at the controls, South Alabama has averaged more than 49 points per game against the three Group of Six opponents it has faced. That kind of production has carried the Jaguars through several games in which their defense has struggled.

Storyline: Can the Jaguars Defense Do Enough?

South Alabama’s offense has been prolific, but its defense remains the biggest question mark on the roster. Several times this season, the Jaguars have built comfortable leads only to watch opponents climb back into the game.

The pattern has been consistent:

  • Against Ohio, South Alabama held on for a 41-36 win after nearly letting a large lead slip away.
  • Against Louisiana-Monroe, a team that had not won a game, the Jaguars allowed the Warhawks to stay close far longer than expected before pulling away for a 52-35 victory.
  • Against Arkansas State, South Alabama again nearly squandered a big advantage before escaping with a 56-49 win, despite the Red Wolves having had trouble scoring points for much of the season.

Allowing 35 points to a winless team and 49 points to an offense that had struggled elsewhere is not a formula the Jaguars want to rely on, especially on the road.

There is a bright spot, however. South Alabama’s defense has proven opportunistic. The Jaguars have forced 11 turnovers while giving the ball away just three times, good for a plus-8 turnover margin that is tied for sixth-best in the nation. Against a Marshall offense that turned the ball over four times in its last outing, that ability to take the ball away could prove decisive.

Prediction: South Alabama 44, Marshall 40

All signs point toward a high-scoring night in Huntington. South Alabama’s offense has been nearly unstoppable since Hollins took over, and Marshall’s pass defense has been among the most generous in the conference. That combination favors the Jaguars, who should be able to generate big plays through the air and keep the scoreboard moving.

Still, South Alabama’s defensive struggles make it difficult to project a comfortable win. Marshall has talent at quarterback, and if the Thundering Herd can clean up their turnover problems, they are capable of matching the Jaguars score for score for long stretches.

The projection: South Alabama 44, Marshall 40. In that scenario, the Jaguars would produce enough offense to secure another road win, improve to 3-0 in conference play and remain firmly in the hunt for the Sun Belt West title.

What to Know Before Kickoff

Marshall joined the Sun Belt Conference in 2022, bringing the Thundering Herd into the same league as South Alabama, and the two programs met for the first time the following season. With the Jaguars competing in the West Division and Marshall in the East, the teams do not meet every year, which adds to the significance of Tuesday’s cross-division matchup.

Midweek games have become a familiar part of the Sun Belt football calendar, and Tuesday night kickoffs give league programs a national spotlight on nights when fewer college games are being played. For South Alabama fans in Mobile and across the Gulf Coast, the Central time kickoff means the game begins at 6:30 p.m. local time.

Here are the essential details:

  • Matchup: South Alabama (4-2, 2-0 Sun Belt) at Marshall (3-3, 0-2 Sun Belt)
  • Location: Joan C. Edwards Stadium, Huntington, W.Va.
  • Date and time: Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. Central
  • Series history: South Alabama leads 1-0 after a 28-0 win in Mobile in 2023
  • Last game, South Alabama: Won 56-49 over Arkansas State on Oct. 8
  • Last game, Marshall: Lost 27-20 to Coastal Carolina on Oct. 10

A victory would give South Alabama its fourth win in five games with Hollins as the starter and keep the Jaguars unbeaten in Sun Belt play as the season moves toward November. For Marshall, a win would provide a much-needed first conference victory and could change the direction of a season that began with high hopes. Either way, Tuesday night in Huntington should offer plenty of offense and a meaningful test for both teams.
