NEW ORLEANS — South Alabama junior Daniel Leitner was named the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Year at the league’s awards banquet in New Orleans on Thursday.
Five Men Earn All-Conference Honors
Leitner was also named to the All-Sun Belt team, one of five Jaguar men honored. Leitner and freshman Tuki Jacobs were first-team singles selections, senior Sayann Vaezzadeh was named to the second team in singles, and junior Manuel Belda and sophomore Gerhard Gruindelingh were second-team doubles picks.
The five selections are the most for the South Alabama men’s program since it also had five all-conference players in 2001. Leitner was a first-team singles pick in 2013 as a sophomore.
Four Women Recognized
The South Alabama women also placed four players on the All-Sun Belt team. Freshman Laura Valkova was named to the first team, and freshman Monica Mitta earned second-team honors in both singles and doubles. Junior Emily Newton and sophomore Michaela Meszarosova were named to the second team in doubles.
Newton and Meszarosova were also all-conference honorees last season.
