Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile is making steady progress on a round of renovations to the USS Alabama this summer.
The work began in late spring on the upper levels of the ship, where many visitors climb to the 08 and 09 decks for sweeping views of the park and Mobile Bay. Crews inspected the steel in those areas and found sections of plate that needed to be replaced, according to Janet Cobb, executive director of Battleship Memorial Park.
A donation of steel plate from SSAB Steel made the repair work possible. The new plate is being laid down on the upper decks as part of the ongoing upkeep of the World War II battleship, one of Mobile’s best-known landmarks.
The USS Alabama has drawn visitors to the park on the west side of Mobile for decades, and the current renovations are aimed at preserving the ship for future generations.
