Bay Minette kicked off the school day a little differently this week, as hundreds of parents, students and community members gathered for Baldwin County’s annual Walk and Roll to School Day. Bay Minette Elementary was among more than a dozen schools across the county that took part in the event, which encourages families to walk, bike or scooter to school together instead of arriving by car or bus.
Students pedaled bikes and tricycles alongside their parents for the roughly 10-minute walk, turning an ordinary school morning into a community gathering. Bay Minette Elementary Principal Allison Maxwell said the event captures what makes the school and its surrounding neighborhood special.
“It’s just exciting,” Maxwell said. “We’re very fortunate in Baldwin County to live in a beautiful county, but also to be here in Bay Minette at a neighborhood school. We just have a beautiful neighborhood around us. It’s just safe. We’ve got so many of our law enforcement. They love to join us and partner with us when we do things like this.”
Local law enforcement officers joined the walk, adding an extra layer of visibility and safety along the route while reinforcing ties between the school and the officers who serve the area.
For many parents, the event offered a rare chance to slow down during an otherwise hectic morning routine. Brittany Wallace, a parent who took part in the walk, said the shared time with her child made the event worthwhile.
“In the mornings it’s kind of crazy and we all don’t get to talk,” Wallace said. “And we all get to do it together this morning. Not every parent can do it because they have to work and some get to drop them off. He gets to go right with me to school.”
Maxwell said the turnout reflects a broader pattern of parent involvement at the school, with families ranging from those with six-year-olds up through 12-year-olds showing up to support school events throughout the year.
“Not just the city, but our parents as well love to be a part of anything that we do at school,” Maxwell said. “We just have wonderful support. But they like to be here and be with their children.”
Beyond the community-building aspect, organizers also framed the event around promoting healthy habits among students. Bay Minette Elementary already counts a number of students who walk or bike to school on a daily basis given its status as a neighborhood school, and Maxwell said the annual event reinforces those habits.
“Just that idea of being healthy,” Maxwell said. “Getting out and being with your family. Walking to school and getting that exercise. We have many students because we are a neighborhood school who ride their bikes to school and who walk to school each and every day.”
School officials estimated roughly 250 people participated in this year’s Walk and Roll to School Day at Bay Minette Elementary, part of a countywide effort spanning more than a dozen Baldwin County schools.
