Every dollar goes to families in need

Blossoms of Hope is the Christian Service Center’s annual fundraiser, and organizers say 100 percent of the money raised goes directly to the center. The all-volunteer organization uses those funds to provide food and emergency financial help to low-income families based on Pleasure Island, the barrier island community that includes Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan.

Because the center is run entirely by volunteers, the money raised at the reception goes to services rather than salaries. That model has helped the event grow into one of the most significant charitable nights on the south Baldwin County calendar.

From Toys 4 Kids to a six-figure gala

The event has come a long way from its modest beginnings. Blossoms of Hope was started more than a decade ago by Terri Long of Wildflowers Clothing Boutique. In its early days it was known as Toys 4 Kids and was held at Fisher’s Restaurant, now Shipp’s, where it funded the center’s Christmas Cheer program and raised $4,000.

The reception has grown dramatically since then. Last year’s event raised $407,000, a total boosted by gifts from the Meadlock family in honor of Jim and Nancy Meadlock, former owners of Perdido Beach Resort, and a $150,000 grant through the Joe and Mary Ann Cromeans Charitable Foundation.

That growth reflects both the generosity of the island’s residents and businesses and the scale of the need. Coastal tourism communities can be expensive places to live, and many workers in hospitality, retail and service jobs face seasonal swings in income. A missed paycheck, a medical bill or a car repair can quickly put rent or a utility payment out of reach.

What the Christian Service Center does

The Christian Service Center is a nonprofit organization that serves low-income families in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan. Its work includes:

  • Food assistance through its food pantry
  • Emergency financial aid, including help with rent and utility bills
  • Referrals to other agencies and resources based on a client’s needs
  • Counseling for clients with ongoing needs
  • Children’s programs, including the Christmas Cheer program and a backpack program

The Christmas Cheer program, which the original Toys 4 Kids event was created to support, has provided holiday gifts for more than 500 local children each year. The center has also reported serving thousands of clients annually; in 2022, it reported serving more than 7,200 clients, providing food assistance to more than 6,100 people, rental assistance to 465 families and utility assistance to 267 families.

Volunteers handle the day-to-day work, from casework and answering phones to staffing the food pantry and organizing fundraisers. Center volunteers describe their work as serving as the hands and feet of Christ in the community, and they credit donors with providing the means to carry out the center’s missions and programs.

How to support the Blossoms of Hope reception

There are several ways for individuals and businesses to take part in this year’s event:

  • Sponsor a table. Table sponsorships are available for businesses, groups and individuals who want to host guests for the evening.
  • Donate an auction item. The live and silent auctions rely on donated goods, services and experiences, and organizers are accepting auction items.
  • Attend and bid. Every winning bid and every guest helps the center’s bottom line.
  • Volunteer or give directly. The Christian Service Center welcomes volunteers and donations year-round.

Those interested in sponsorships, auction donations or other ways to help can contact the Christian Service Center at 251-968-5256 or visit the center at 317 Dolphin Ave. in Gulf Shores. The center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon.

About Perdido Beach Resort

Perdido Beach Resort is a longtime Orange Beach landmark on Perdido Beach Boulevard, overlooking the Gulf. Its ties to the Blossoms of Hope reception run deep: Jim and Nancy Meadlock, the resort’s former owners, are honored by the family gifts that helped push last year’s total past $400,000. The resort’s grand ballroom has become the event’s home as it has grown from a restaurant gathering into a full-scale gala.

A season of giving on Pleasure Island

The reception arrives as the holiday season approaches, a time when requests for help often rise. Families who are already stretched can find the added costs of the holidays overwhelming, and the Christian Service Center’s Christmas Cheer program has long helped make sure local children have gifts to open.

The need has been especially visible this fall, as communities across south Baldwin County continue recovering from Hurricane Isaias, which swept through the region in October.

For guests on Nov. 14, Blossoms of Hope offers a chance to enjoy a festive night out, catch a little football and know that every dollar spent at the auction tables stays close to home, helping neighbors on Pleasure Island keep food on the table and the lights on.
