The History Museum of Mobile has announced that Clotilda: The Exhibition will open to the public on July 8 at the newly constructed Africatown Heritage House — a date chosen deliberately, marking 163 years since the 110 men and women aboard the Clotilda were brought to Mobile against their will.
Museum staff have been developing the exhibit since 2020 inside the new Heritage House, which was built to tell the story of the survivors of the last known slave ship to reach American shores and the community they built in Africatown.
A community-backed project
The museum credits a long list of partners for making the project possible, including Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood and the county commission, the City of Mobile, the Alabama Historical Commission, the Alabama Power Foundation, the Daniel Foundation of Alabama and the Crampton Trust.

Once open, the Africatown Heritage House will welcome visitors Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
