Fairhope Recycling Program Highlighted in 2007 Community Report
Fairhope officials said recycling sales topped $100,000 as schools earned report cards, Fairhope Middle School won a bench and the city held an e-waste day.
FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Fairhope’s recycling program took in more than $100,000 from the sale of recycled materials over the past year, city officials said in a 2007 local television report on the program.
Residents, schools and businesses all take part in the program, according to the report.
Schools graded on recycling
Schools in the city get recycling report cards that track how they are doing. Fairhope Middle School received an outdoor bench in recognition of its recycling efforts.
Electronics collection
The report also described a one-day electronics recycling event. The event aimed to keep old electronics, which can contain lead and other heavy metals, out of the landfill.
Later update: A December 2007 report to the Fairhope City Council said the city collected 2,131 tons of recyclable materials in 2007 and received $126,339 for them, compared with 1,959 tons and $87,749 in 2006. Public Works Director Jennifer Fidler credited the schools and said nearly 40 percent of residents were recycling. The city set a goal of reaching 60 percent.
