“Big-man touchdowns” are among the most entertaining plays in football. But when Gulf Shores nose guard Gabriel Ervin scooped up a loose ball and rumbled down the field for a 79-yard score last Friday, it did not look like the usual lineman touchdown.
Ervin seemed comfortable with the ball in his hands, and the play was another example of the 265-pounder’s athleticism.
The Stat Line
Ervin finished with five total tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, a pair of fumble recoveries and the 79-yard scoop-and-score in Gulf Shores’ 34-10 win over St. Paul’s.
Two fumble recoveries in a single game is largely a function of positioning and effort rather than luck — a nose guard who is consistently in the backfield is also consistently near the ball when it comes loose.
The 79-yard return is the outlier. A player at 265 pounds covering that distance with the ball, without being run down, is unusual at any level, and it is the kind of play that circulates well beyond a local box score.
The Recruiting Picture
Ervin already holds offers from Tennessee, Texas Tech and South Florida.
Offers from that tier of program signal that college staffs have identified traits that project upward — for an interior defensive lineman, that generally means first-step quickness, leverage and the ability to hold a gap against double teams. Ervin’s recruitment will likely continue to expand as he produces more film like he has early this season.
Mark Hudspeth and his staff, meanwhile, get to keep the nose guard on their roster for another year.
The Award
Ervin’s efforts earned him the latest Athlete of the Week honor after public voting concluded Tuesday evening, covering the Aug. 24-30 period.
The Other Nominees
Other nominees for the week included Fairhope running back Nic Ronsisvalle, Bayside Academy setter Sophie Hester and Daphne quarterback Christian Segar.
The slate reflects the breadth of the local fall calendar — two football players, a volleyball setter and a quarterback across three Baldwin County programs.
Next Up
Ervin and Gulf Shores, now 2-0, next visit Saraland at 7 p.m. Friday for a marquee matchup.
Saraland presents the kind of offensive line Ervin has not yet faced this season, and the trip is an early measure of whether the Dolphins’ 2-0 start reflects a genuinely improved team or a favorable opening schedule.
