A teenager in handcuffs managed to break away from police custody in Spanish Fort and stayed on the run for nearly five hours before officers caught up with him.
According to the Spanish Fort Police Department, the 17-year-old was accused of trying to steal shoes from Kohl’s at the Spanish Fort Town Center around 4 p.m. Monday.
Officers took the teen to the Eastern Shore Center police station. That is where, police said, he ran off and evaded capture for close to five hours.
He was taken back into custody around 9 p.m. Monday, the department said.
