MOBILE, Ala. — Joe Espada, one of the most decorated baseball players in University of Mobile history, has been fired as manager of the Houston Astros. The team announced the decision last Wednesday afternoon, ending Espada’s three-season run in his first job as a Major League Baseball manager.

Espada compiled a 256-229 record with the Astros and led the club to American League West titles in 2024 and 2026. His dismissal by owner Jim Crane follows the firing of general manager Dana Brown in late August.

Postseason struggles

Houston reached the American League playoffs this season but was swept 2-0 by the Chicago White Sox. Under Espada, the Astros made two postseason appearances and went 0-4 in playoff games.

For a franchise that had grown accustomed to deep October runs in recent years, two quick postseason exits proved costly despite the division titles.

Nine seasons in the Astros organization

Although he managed the Astros for only three seasons, Espada had been with the organization for the past nine. He served as bench coach under managers A.J. Hinch and Dusty Baker before being promoted to manager after Baker retired.

Espada had interviewed several times for Major League managerial openings before the Astros elevated him. He has reportedly already interviewed for the Seattle Mariners’ managerial opening.

A celebrated career at Mobile

Before his professional career, Espada was a standout middle infielder at the University of Mobile, where he put together one of the finest careers in the program’s history.

  • Three-time first-team All-Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) selection
  • Two-time GCAC Player of the Year
  • Two-time second-team All-America selection, in 1995 and 1996
  • Jersey No. 6 retired by the University of Mobile in 2019
  • Inducted into the University of Mobile Athletics Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2024

The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference was the NAIA conference in which the University of Mobile played at the time, and Espada’s honors placed him among the top players in the league during his time with the Rams.

From draft pick to big-league dugout

Following the 1996 season, the Oakland A’s selected Espada in the second round of the Major League Baseball draft, No. 45 overall. He spent 10 seasons in the minor leagues before retiring as a player and moving into coaching.

He worked in the Marlins organization from 2006 to 2013 and later served as third base coach for the New York Yankees before joining the Astros. His steady climb through coaching roles made him one of the most frequently interviewed managerial candidates in the game before Houston gave him his first opportunity.

Career at a glance

  • College: University of Mobile, middle infielder; two-time second-team All-American (1995, 1996)
  • Draft: Second round, No. 45 overall, Oakland A’s, 1996
  • Playing career: 10 seasons in the minor leagues
  • Coaching: Marlins organization (2006-13); New York Yankees third base coach; Astros bench coach under A.J. Hinch and Dusty Baker
  • Astros manager: Three seasons, 256-229 record, AL West titles in 2024 and 2026, 0-4 in the postseason

Espada’s firing closes one chapter for a former Mobile star who rose from small-college baseball on the Gulf Coast to managing one of the sport’s most successful franchises. If the Mariners or another club hire him, he would get a second chance to lead a big-league team.
