Le Krewe de Bienville marked its 50th anniversary during the 2011 Carnival season with a Mardi Gras ball featuring live entertainment from New Orleans funk legends The Funky Meters — a golden-anniversary booking for one of Mobile’s signature krewes.
The anniversary ball promised a full night of tradition and elegance: food, drink and live music in the classic Carnival mold. Attendance was strictly limited to ages 21 and up, with a dress code to match — formal wear or a full masquerade costume was required, and the krewe published detailed attire rules and examples on its website for anyone unsure what qualified.
Tickets were available online as well as in person at Serda’s Coffee and Randall’s Formalwear, giving revelers several ways into one of the season’s milestone celebrations. For a krewe that had spent five decades helping define Mobile’s Carnival calendar, the Funky Meters — architects of the New Orleans funk sound — made for a fitting soundtrack to the golden anniversary.
