MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile Police Department is asking the public to help find Joseph Thornton, a 20-year-old man who has been reported missing and who police say has a medical condition that requires immediate attention.

Thornton was last seen on Sept. 30, according to a news release from the department, meaning he has not been seen in about two weeks.

Description

Police released the following information to help people recognize Thornton:

  • Name: Joseph Thornton
  • Age: 20
  • Height: 5 feet, 4 inches
  • Weight: About 200 pounds
  • Last seen: Sept. 30, 2026
  • Health: Police say he has a medical condition that needs immediate attention.

The information released by police did not describe the medical condition.

How to help

Anyone who knows where Thornton is, or who believes they have seen him since Sept. 30, is asked to call the Mobile Police Department at 251-208-7211. If you see someone you believe is Thornton and he appears to need medical help, call 911 right away.

Small details can matter in a missing person case. When calling police, it helps to share:

  • The date, time and exact location where you saw him
  • What he was wearing and whether he was alone or with someone
  • Whether he was on foot, on a bus or in a vehicle, and a description of any vehicle
  • The direction he was headed
  • Any photos, video or doorbell-camera footage that might show him

Sharing the police department’s official post about Thornton on social media can also help the request reach more people. When sharing, rely on information released by police rather than rumors, which can slow down an investigation.

Why a medical condition raises the urgency

Police often stress that a missing person has a medical condition because it can change how quickly a situation becomes dangerous. A person who goes without needed medication or care, or who becomes confused or disoriented because of an illness, may be unable to ask for help or may not recognize that they need it. That is why investigators ask anyone who spots a missing person with a medical condition to contact authorities immediately instead of waiting.

What families should know about reporting a missing adult

Adults have the legal right to go somewhere without telling family or friends, and not every adult who is out of contact is in danger. But police generally do not require families to wait a set amount of time before reporting someone missing, and reporting quickly is especially important when the person has a medical or mental health condition, is vulnerable, or has gone missing under unusual circumstances.

Families can report a missing adult to the police agency where the person lives or was last seen. In Mobile, that is the Mobile Police Department, which can be reached at 251-208-7211 for non-emergencies. Investigators typically ask for a recent photo, a physical description, the clothing the person was last seen wearing, medical information, phone numbers, social media accounts, vehicle information, and the names of friends and places the person often visits.

Families of missing people can also enter information into NamUs, the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System. The free national database is funded by the U.S. Department of Justice’s National Institute of Justice and helps law enforcement, medical examiners and families match missing person cases with unidentified people across the country.

Recent requests from Mobile police

Mobile police regularly turn to the public for help finding missing people. Earlier this month, the department asked for help finding Lonnie Bailey, 21.

Anyone with information about Joseph Thornton’s whereabouts is asked to call Mobile police at 251-208-7211. This story will be updated if police release more information.
