The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrests of three people following a months-long investigation into the financial exploitation of an elderly Mobile County man. Authorities said the case began in November 2025 after the victim’s daughter came forward with concerns that her father was being defrauded.
According to the sheriff’s office, the daughter reported that her elderly father may have been the victim of fraud, exploitation, forgery and theft. Investigators said the resulting probe uncovered a connection between three individuals and the victim, and found that approximately $659,000 in assets had been taken from him. The sheriff’s office said the true total could be closer to $1 million, but charges were limited to the amounts investigators could confirm with clear evidence.
During the investigation, deputies executed a search warrant at a home in Satsuma, where they said they recovered cell phones, a laptop and a notebook containing financial records, mail, handwritten documents, legal paperwork and property deeds bearing the victim’s information.
Melissa Lynn Hobden faces two counts of first-degree financial exploitation of the elderly, three counts of first-degree theft of property and a count of identity theft, according to the sheriff’s office. Michael Lewis is charged with first-degree theft of property, first-degree attempted theft of property and two counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument. Nora Powe Hobden is charged with first-degree theft of property and first-degree financial exploitation of the elderly.
“Financial crimes against our elderly citizens are among the most heartbreaking crimes we investigate because they involve the abuse of trust,” Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch said. “Our investigators spent months following the evidence, reviewing financial records, and building a case that would hold those responsible accountable. If you exploit the elderly for your own financial gain, you should expect the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office to pursue you relentlessly.”
All three suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. Burch said the investigation remains open and additional charges are possible.
