Volunteers restoring an oyster reef

Mobile Volunteers Built Oyster Reef for Coastal Restoration in 2011

James Bullard, January 22, 2011

Hundreds of volunteers gathered at Helen Wood Park in Mobile in January 2011 to build an oyster reef as part of the 100-1000 Restore Coastal Alabama project, according to WKRG.

Organizers aimed to construct a quarter-mile reef in muddy water. The report said the work was difficult and volunteers did not finish as much of the project as planned on the first day.

Organizers asked for additional volunteers to return the following morning to help complete the effort.

This is a historical summary of a 2011 community restoration project.
