MOBILE, Ala. — A pedestrian died Tuesday night, Oct. 27, after being struck by a car in Mobile, authorities said. The Mobile pedestrian killed crash happened near the intersection of Old Pascagoula Road and Theodore Dawes Road, according to an officer at the scene.
Police said the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is taking over the investigation.
What is known
Authorities have released only limited information about the crash. As of late Tuesday:
- The person who was hit has not been publicly identified, and no age or hometown has been released.
- It was not clear whether police were still looking for the driver of the car involved, or whether the driver stayed at the scene.
- No information has been released about what led to the crash, the type of vehicle involved, or whether any charges are being considered.
Victims’ names in fatal crashes are commonly withheld until relatives have been notified.
Why state troopers are investigating
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, known as ALEA, is the state’s primary law enforcement agency. Its Highway Patrol Division, made up of state troopers, investigates traffic crashes across Alabama, including fatal ones. Police did not say why the case is being handed to ALEA.
In fatal crash investigations, investigators typically examine the scene, document where the vehicle and pedestrian came to rest, look for evidence such as skid marks and vehicle damage, and interview the driver and any witnesses. Findings in a fatal crash can take weeks to complete, and any decision about charges comes after that work is done.
Pedestrian safety reminders
Pedestrians are among the most vulnerable people on the road, because they have no protection when struck by a vehicle. Traffic safety officials regularly offer these reminders:
- Cross at marked crosswalks or intersections whenever possible, and obey pedestrian signals.
- Walk on sidewalks where they exist; where there is no sidewalk, walk facing oncoming traffic and as far from the travel lanes as possible.
- At night, wear light-colored or reflective clothing and carry a flashlight so drivers can see you.
- Avoid distractions such as phones and headphones when crossing.
- Drivers should slow down, watch for people walking, especially after dark, and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
How to help
Anyone who saw the crash or has information about it can contact the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency or Mobile police. In an emergency, call 911.
