SPANISH FORT, Ala. — As Alabamians lined up to vote on Election Day, hundreds of people in Spanish Fort lined up Tuesday for a different reason: food assistance at Prodisee Pantry.

The monthly distribution at the pantry, at 9315 Spanish Fort Blvd., regularly draws hundreds of people. At first glance Tuesday, the crowd looked much like the line that forms around Thanksgiving each year.

An orderly crowd

A pantry spokesperson said lines had been deep and steady well before the start time. The operation was very busy but orderly, and several people in line were seen helping an older woman and man and letting them move ahead.

Thanksgiving ahead

Prodisee Pantry’s Thanksgiving meal effort will distribute more than 22,000 pounds of turkey and 250,000 pounds of food.

Organizers describe Prodisee Pantry as Baldwin County’s largest nonprofit emergency food pantry. South AL News reported earlier this year that its volunteers served 11,102 families last year, representing about 25,000 people, and that 1,444 families received nine tons of turkey and more than 18 tons of holiday foods during its previous Thanksgiving distribution.

The pantry’s annual Turkey Trot in Old Towne Daphne, its 18th, was scheduled for Oct. 24 with proceeds going to the pantry, and the Fairhope Lions Club named it among the beneficiaries of its October golf tournament. South AL News has also reported that the pantry broke ground on a north Baldwin food pantry in Stockton.
