Community park in Saraland, Alabama

2007 Tour Captured Saraland’s Growth and Small-Town Character

James Bullard, July 13, 2007

Historical community report, published from archived WKRG coverage.

An archived WKRG community feature from 2007 captured Saraland as it marked its 50th anniversary and prepared for continued growth.

The report highlighted the city’s 15 parks, new subdivisions along Celeste Road, and the small-town atmosphere residents said drew families to the community. Mayor Ken Williams said at the time that the city was working on three annexations.

WKRG also reported plans for a separate Saraland school district and a new high school near I-65 and Industrial Parkway, along with a civic center that included senior services. The feature noted Bayou Sara’s fishing and boating opportunities and recounted a local account of the city’s name.

This is a historical portrait of Saraland in 2007; plans and population figures may have changed.
