A west Mobile brush fire that firefighters thought they had knocked down came back to life the next morning, drawing crews back to Sollie Road for a second day.
Fire First Threatened Apartment Complex
Mobile Fire-Rescue was first dispatched to Sollie Road near the Charleston apartment homes on Sunday night, May 1, for a reported brush fire. Crews contained two separate wood fires that had been burning close enough to pose a threat to the nearby apartment complex.
Rekindle Draws Multi-Agency Response
The fire rekindled Monday morning in the same area, and firefighters returned to finish the job. This time the response grew to include the Theodore-Dawes Volunteer Fire Department, the Alabama Forestry Commission, and Mobile police, who assisted as Mobile Fire-Rescue units fully extinguished the flames.
Forestry officials estimated that roughly five acres burned in all. Despite the rekindle, officials with Mobile Fire-Rescue said the renewed fire did not endanger any nearby residents before it was brought under control.
