Vehicle fire with smoke on a roadway

SUV Bursts Into Flames at Mobile Intersection; Driver, Passenger Escape Unharmed

James Bullard, July 21, 2026

An SUV caught fire Monday morning at the intersection of Cottage Hill Road and Azalea Road in Mobile, with both occupants escaping unharmed before the vehicle was fully engulfed.

The fire broke out around 9:15 a.m., with witnesses reporting a loud pop followed by a plume of smoke as flames shot out of the vehicle’s grill and engine block.

Police said no one was injured. The driver and a passenger were able to get out of the SUV before the fire spread, and investigators believe a mechanical problem was responsible for the blaze.
