JACKSON, Ala. — A field goal as time expired lifted the T.R. Miller Tigers to a 24-21 region win over the Jackson Aggies on Friday night, capping a tense road game that stayed tied deep into the second half.
The win pushed the Brewton school to 4-1 in region play and 6-2 overall, strengthening the Tigers’ position as the regular season heads into its final weeks and teams across the state jockey for playoff spots.
Henderson’s touchdown the only score of the first half
The opening half belonged to the defenses. T.R. Miller produced the only points before the break when K.J. Henderson broke loose and carried the ball into the end zone.
The Tigers lined up to go for two after the touchdown, but a penalty pushed them back. They switched to a point-after kick, which failed, leaving the score at 6-0.
Penalties were a recurring theme throughout the first half, interrupting drives on both sides. Jackson struggled to get its offense going against a determined T.R. Miller defense that kept the Aggies off the scoreboard through the first two quarters.
T.R. Miller carried its 6-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Aggies strike quickly after the break
Jackson received the kickoff to start the second half and wasted little time. The Aggies needed just four plays to move the ball the length of the field, with a runner finishing the drive in the end zone. A successful extra point gave Jackson a 7-6 lead, its first of the night.
The Tigers took some time to respond, but they did, scoring a touchdown of their own and converting a two-point try to regain the momentum.
From there, the game turned into a back-and-forth contest. Both teams continued to find the end zone, and by the third quarter the score was knotted at 21-21.
Last-second kick decides it
Neither offense could break the tie until the very end. As the clock hit 0:00, the Tigers put the decisive three points through the uprights, sealing a 24-21 victory over their region rival.
In high school football, a play that is already underway when the clock runs out is allowed to finish, which is how games can be decided on a kick with zeroes showing on the scoreboard. For T.R. Miller, the timing could not have been better, as the kick ended the game without giving Jackson another possession.
The result also showed how much the Tigers’ failed conversion attempt in the first half had mattered. With the teams even for much of the night, the final margin came down to a single kick.
What the win means in the region standings
Region games carry extra weight in Alabama High School Athletic Association football. Schools are grouped into regions within their classification, and region records determine which teams qualify for the state playoffs and how they are seeded. Typically, the top four teams from each region advance to the postseason, with region champions earning home games in the opening round.
At 4-1 in region play, T.R. Miller has put itself in a solid position heading into the stretch run. Each remaining region game still matters, though, because tiebreakers and seeding can come down to the final week of the regular season.
For Jackson, the narrow loss was a missed opportunity against a region opponent in a game it led in the third quarter.
