Students, faculty and family members are gathering this week at the University of South Alabama to remember a nursing student whose death in a car accident over the July 4 holiday weekend has left a deep mark on the tight-knit campus community.
The student was on her way to visit her boyfriend for the holiday weekend when her vehicle was struck by a tractor-trailer while she sat in traffic, according to those close to the case. She had reportedly been on the phone with her mother at the time of the crash. Family and friends gathered at the hospital afterward, more than 40 people in all, hoping for good news that ultimately did not come.
Even in the midst of tragedy, those who knew her say her generosity extended beyond her own life. She had previously registered as an organ donor, and that final wish was honored, allowing her death to save the lives of others in need of transplants.
A candlelight vigil is scheduled for Thursday evening at the university’s Moulton Bell Tower, a familiar campus landmark, beginning at dusk around 7:30 p.m. The event was organized by faculty members within the nursing program specifically so students and staff who were unable to travel to her funeral out of state would still have a chance to grieve together and honor her memory as a community.
Those who worked closely with her in the nursing program describe an unusually close cohort of students who spent long hours together in clinical rotations and study groups, a dynamic that made her death felt especially deeply among her classmates. Beyond her nursing coursework, she was also an active member of the university’s Air Force ROTC detachment, balancing military training commitments alongside a demanding academic course load. In recognition of that service, she is set to receive a military ceremony in her honor as part of the broader remembrance efforts.
Organizers say candles will be provided at Thursday’s vigil, and a chaplain with the campus Catholic Student Association is expected to offer remarks during the gathering. The vigil is open to the full university community, reflecting how far her presence extended beyond her immediate nursing cohort and ROTC unit.
For a campus the size of the University of South Alabama, sudden losses like this one tend to ripple outward quickly, touching students, instructors and staff who may have crossed paths with her in classrooms, campus organizations or everyday student life.
