MOBILE, Ala. — A perfectly placed throw to the corner of the end zone has earned Cottage Hill Christian Academy’s Shemar Toodle and Aaron Ward the Wind Creek Play of the Week honor for Week 9 of the high school football season.

Toodle, a junior quarterback, and Ward, a sophomore wide receiver, connected on the touchdown during the Warriors’ Friday night game against the St. Luke’s Episcopal Wildcats. The scoring strike stood out as one of the biggest moments of the night as Cottage Hill Christian rolled to a 41-13 victory over its fellow Mobile private school.

The Play

The touchdown came on a pass from Toodle that found Ward in the corner of the end zone, one of the most difficult areas of the field for a quarterback to hit and for a receiver to secure the catch. Throws to the corner leave little margin for error. The ball must be placed where only the receiver can reach it, and the receiver must make the catch while keeping his feet inbounds near the sideline and end line.

The connection between a junior signal-caller and a sophomore pass catcher is also a promising sign for the Warriors’ future. With Toodle and Ward both returning for at least one more season after this fall, Cottage Hill Christian could have a productive passing combination in place for years to come.

A Lopsided Win Over St. Luke’s

The Toodle-to-Ward score helped power a dominant performance. Cottage Hill Christian scored 41 points and held St. Luke’s Episcopal to 13, a 28-point margin of victory over a crosstown opponent.

Both schools are private institutions in Mobile, and games between local schools carry extra meaning for players, families and fans who often know one another away from the field. A convincing win in a game like this one can provide a lift for a team heading into the final weeks of the regular season.

Warriors Riding a Winning Streak

The victory improved Cottage Hill Christian Academy to 6-2 on the season and gave the Warriors back-to-back wins. With two straight victories, the team is playing some of its best football as the regular season winds down.

Cottage Hill Christian will try to extend that streak to three games on Friday night, when the Warriors travel to face the Northside Methodist Academy Knights. Northside Methodist, located in Dothan, enters the game with a 1-7 record, and the trip will take the Warriors across the state to the Wiregrass region of southeast Alabama.

Here is a quick look at the upcoming matchup:

  • Matchup: Cottage Hill Christian Academy Warriors (6-2) at Northside Methodist Academy Knights (1-7)
  • When: Friday night
  • Where: Dothan
  • At stake: A third consecutive victory for the Warriors
