Week 9 High School Football: No. 1 Williamson and No. 3 Vigor Collide Thursday at Ladd-Peebles
Class 4A No. 1 Williamson hosts No. 3 Vigor Thursday at Ladd-Peebles Stadium to headline Week 9 high school football on the Gulf Coast, while several teams play twice in five days after Hurricane Isaias.
MOBILE, Ala. — The biggest game of Week 9 high school football on the Gulf Coast arrives a night early. Class 4A No. 1 Williamson and No. 3 Vigor meet Thursday, Oct. 15, at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in a matchup of two of the most dominant teams in the state.
The rest of the Coastal Alabama slate follows Friday, Oct. 16, with 35 games on the schedule, including several teams playing for the second time in five days after Hurricane Isaias scrambled last week’s calendar.
Williamson vs. Vigor: Two juggernauts
The numbers explain why Thursday’s game is the headliner.
- Williamson (6-0): The Lions have outscored opponents 245-25 and have held the No. 1 spot in the Class 4A state rankings.
- Vigor (6-1): The Wolves have outscored opponents 240-58. Their only loss came in Week 3 at Orange Beach, 21-19, in a game Vigor played without several key stars.
Williamson’s defense has been the story of its season. The Lions earned Team of the Week honors from the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office after a 42-0 rout of previously unbeaten Orange Beach in Week 7, a win that kept their No. 1 ranking intact. Through their first five games they had allowed points in only one, a 19-18 road win at Pine Forest, Fla.
Vigor, meanwhile, has rebounded from its early loss with a defense of its own. The Wolves went on the road to beat then-No. 5 Benjamin Russell 20-10 in late September, shutting down standout Kingston Preyear.
Both programs carry deep roots in Mobile County football, and Vigor, in Prichard, has produced a long line of college and NFL players, including former Bengals star Willie Anderson. With both teams among the top three in Class 4A, Thursday’s result could shape seeding and home-field advantage when the playoffs begin.

Two games in five days after Isaias
Hurricane Isaias, which made landfall near Destin, Fla., on Friday night, Oct. 9, pushed nearly every Week 8 game in Mobile and Baldwin counties to Thursday, Oct. 8, and forced three games to Monday, Oct. 12. As a result, several South Alabama teams are in the middle of an unusually short week.
Clarke County, Thomasville, Satsuma and St. Michael all played Monday and are scheduled to play again Friday. Orange Beach also played Monday, beating Satsuma 38-14 to move into sole possession of second place in Class 4A, Region 1, but the Makos are idle Friday.
St. Michael, which held off Houston Academy 34-28 on Monday afternoon behind Nygel Mitchell’s 276 rushing yards and the return of quarterback Gunner Rivers, travels to Glenwood in Phenix City. Houston Academy also faces a quick turnaround, making the trip from Dothan to Faith Academy in Mobile.
Playing twice in five days is rare in high school football, where teams normally get a full week to recover, scout and prepare. Coaches typically shorten practices, limit contact and focus on rest when the turnaround is this tight.
Other games to watch Friday
- Gulf Shores at Spanish Fort: Spanish Fort (6-1, 5-0 in Class 5A, Region 1) has outscored opponents 151-21 during a five-game winning streak, including a 31-7 win at Theodore last week.
- Daphne at Mary G. Montgomery: No. 6 Daphne (6-1, 5-0 in Class 6A, Region 1) has won six straight, most recently a 24-17 comeback at Foley led by quarterback Christian Segar.
- Foley at Robertsdale: A longtime Baldwin County rivalry renewed along Highway 59, with Foley looking to rebound from its loss to Daphne.
- Davidson at Fairhope: Fairhope climbed into the Class 6A top 10 earlier this month under first-year coach Caleb Ross.
- Theodore at Murphy: The Bobcats try to bounce back from the loss to Spanish Fort.
- UMS-Wright at St. Paul’s: One of Mobile’s best-known private school rivalries. UMS-Wright is coming off a 33-27 double-overtime win over Montgomery Catholic.

Heading into the stretch run
The regular season is entering its final weeks before the Alabama High School Athletic Association playoffs. Region titles, playoff berths and seeding are all on the line, and the weather is expected to cooperate, with a fall cold front bringing cooler air to the Gulf Coast over the weekend and dry conditions forecast through early next week.
