High School Football Roundup: Christian Segar Leads Daphne Comeback at Foley; Saraland, Williamson Roll
Christian Segar’s late touchdown run and 2-point conversion lifted Daphne past Foley 24-17 as storm-shifted Thursday games produced wins for Spanish Fort, Gulf Shores, Saraland, Williamson and more.
FOLEY, Ala. — Daphne quarterback Christian Segar made sure the Trojans’ winning streak survived a night when Foley seemed to have the answers. Segar ran for an 8-yard touchdown and then added the 2-point conversion with 6:57 to play, lifting sixth-ranked Daphne to a 24-17 comeback win at Foley in a Thursday night high school football slate moved up a day because of Hurricane Isaias.
Nearly every area game originally scheduled for Friday was played Thursday as schools raced to finish before the storm, which made landfall on the Gulf Coast on Friday. Here is a look at the results from around Mobile and Baldwin counties, along with notable scores from elsewhere in Alabama.
Game of the night: Daphne 24, Foley 17
Daphne erased a 17-9 halftime deficit with 15 unanswered points in the second half. The Class 6A Trojans improved to 6-1 overall and 5-0 in Region 1 and have won six straight since an 18-15 loss at Spanish Fort in the season opener. Foley fell to 4-3 and 3-2.
The Trojans scored the first nine points. Malachi Norman kicked a 41-yard field goal on the opening possession, and on the next drive Segar hit Tyler Buchanan for a 70-yard touchdown. Foley blocked the extra point, leaving it 9-0 with 1:49 left in the first quarter. Buchanan caught three of Segar’s first four passes for 104 yards; they were his only receptions of the night.
Foley responded in the second quarter. Judah Spencer threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jaxson Dixon, who caught three passes for 41 yards on the drive. After Micah Stallworth recovered a Tay Young fumble, Alberto Vargas kicked a 28-yard field goal to put the Lions ahead 10-9. Foley then recovered an onside kick, ran the ball seven straight times and scored on Quinten English’s 1-yard run for a 17-9 halftime lead.
Daphne answered late in the third quarter, when Segar threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Braxton Skoglund and Norman’s extra point made it 17-16 with 1:52 left in the period. The Trojans took over at the 11:14 mark of the fourth quarter and went 64 yards in nine plays, with the senior quarterback scoring the final eight points himself.
