MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama quarterbacks coach Bryant Vincent has accepted the offensive coordinator position at UAB under head coach Bill Clark, AL.com reported, making him the third assistant to leave Joey Jones’ staff this offseason.
The departure comes a little more than a week before National Signing Day, leaving the Jaguars without three of their recruiters during a key stretch of the recruiting calendar.
Jones: ‘He Deserves to Call Plays’
“First of all, he’s a great man and a great coach and he did an excellent job at South Alabama these last three years,” Jones told AL.com. “We wish him the best. He deserves to call plays and I think that’s what he wanted to do and they’ve got a good one in him.”
Vincent spent three seasons on the South Alabama staff and coached the quarterbacks for the last two. Under his direction last season, senior quarterback Ross Metheny completed 62% of his passes for 2,622 yards with 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
High School Success
Before joining South Alabama, Vincent was head coach at Spanish Fort High School for four seasons and led the Toros to the 2010 Class 5A state championship. He spent one season as head coach at Greenville before that, and he compiled a 49-16 record as a high school head coach. He also worked as an assistant at Charles Henderson, Spain Park and Hart County, Ky., high schools.
Ties Between the Programs
Clark, South Alabama’s former defensive coordinator, is building his staff at UAB. Duwan Walker and Chuck Dunn, who both previously coached at South Alabama, are expected to join Vincent on the Blazers’ staff.
Third Staff Departure
Vincent follows two other assistants who have left the Jaguars since the end of the season. Wide receivers coach Jerry Mack was named head coach at North Carolina Central, and defensive coordinator Kevin Sherrer left to become a defensive assistant at Georgia under defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, a longtime friend.
Jones has been South Alabama’s head coach since the program began play in 2009. The Jaguars compete in the Sun Belt Conference.
