Candles lit for a community vigil

Daphne Community Gathers for Candlelight Vigil Honoring Samantha Baker

James Bullard, July 20, 2026

Friends and family gathered Sunday night at Eastern Shore Baptist Church in Daphne for a candlelight vigil honoring Samantha Baker, who authorities say was killed in a stabbing outside her home on Augustine Drive two weeks earlier.

Many attendees wore blue as candles were lit and music played while those in attendance shared memories of Baker. The gathering reflected the close-knit community ties Baker was known for building throughout the area.

Samantha’s husband, Lance Baker, who investigators say was also stabbed multiple times during the attack, has since been released from the hospital and attended Sunday’s vigil. He thanked his church family and the many supporters who helped him during his recovery, describing his wife’s gift for making friends quickly and building community, including among the football moms who helped organize the vigil.

An associate pastor at Eastern Shore Baptist Church, where the couple attended services, said Baker’s funeral will be held Friday at the church.

The couple’s 17-year-old son has been charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the case and is being held on a $1 million bond.
