A 17-year-old is facing murder and attempted murder charges in Baldwin County after a nighttime stabbing in the Belforest community left a woman dead and a man fighting for his life, and court records show the teenager is being prosecuted as an adult with bond set at $1 million.

Deputies with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a report of an assault on Augustine Drive in the Belforest community, near Daphne, at about 9 p.m. on Sunday, July 5. When they arrived, they found a man and a woman suffering from apparent stab wounds and took a juvenile suspect at the scene into custody.

The woman, later identified as 37-year-old Samantha Baker, died at the scene. The man, 46-year-old Lance Baker, was airlifted to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Sheriff’s officials said no other injuries were reported.

“The juvenile suspect has been charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “The juvenile suspect’s identity will not be released at this time.” Investigators determined the incident was an isolated domestic matter and said there was no known threat to the public.

A confrontation that spilled into the street

According to published reports, the confrontation began as an argument involving parental discipline inside the family’s home and spread beyond it. Neighbors described a scene that stretched across yards along Augustine Drive before deputies arrived.

One neighbor told Mobile-area television station WALA that she reviewed her security camera footage and heard the wounded father calling for help as he moved from house to house. She described seeing blood on doors and handprints along the route he took, accounts that also appeared in reporting by AL.com. Sheriff’s officials have not released a full account of what happened inside the home or the exact sequence of the injuries.

The sheriff’s office spokesperson, Marlee Bailey, did not respond to a request for information about how the suspect was related to the two adult victims.

Why a juvenile faces adult charges

Although the suspect was initially described only as a juvenile in custody, prosecutors have charged the 17-year-old as an adult — a step Alabama law allows when a juvenile court judge finds probable cause that a serious felony was committed and orders the case transferred to circuit court.

Under the Alabama Juvenile Justice Code, a transfer hearing is not a trial on guilt or innocence. It is a probable cause hearing in which a juvenile court judge decides whether the case should move to the adult system, where the defendant faces the full range of adult penalties if convicted. Murder and attempted murder are among the most serious felony accusations in the state’s penal code, and Baldwin County courts have previously transferred juveniles charged with killings to circuit court.

Following an initial court appearance, the teenager was ordered held on bonds totaling $1 million, according to reporting by WKRG. Because he was a juvenile at the time of the arrest, his name has not been released publicly, and it remains sealed in most court records unless the case proceeds in the adult system.

A quiet community confronting a rare homicide

Belforest is a fast-growing unincorporated community in the Daphne area of Baldwin County, one of Alabama’s fastest-growing counties, where subdivisions have spread across what was farmland within the past two decades. Deadly violence in the community is rare, and the sight of investigators working a homicide scene along Augustine Drive drew neighbors out of their homes on a summer Sunday night.

The sheriff’s office said no other injuries were reported and reiterated that investigators considered the stabbing an isolated domestic incident rather than a random attack. That distinction matters for residents: domestic homicides, which Alabama consistently records among its most common killing categories, typically involve people who know one another rather than strangers.

The case now moves through the adult side of the Baldwin County court system. Prosecutors must prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt, and the teenager is entitled to counsel, a trial and every other protection afforded to adult defendants. If convicted of murder, he would face a sentence of 15 years to life under Alabama’s sentencing guidelines, with the attempted murder count carrying its own potential prison term.

Sheriff’s investigators have not said whether additional charges are possible or whether the investigation is officially closed. Anyone with information about the incident was asked to contact the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office.
