MOBILE, Ala. — A Mobile man has been arrested on child pornography charges after an investigation that began with reports from an artificial intelligence platform, the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office said.

Daniel Thomas Gunn, 47, was arrested Thursday, Nov. 5, after members of the department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Unit, assisted by its Special Operations Unit, executed a search warrant at his home on Wellesley Court.

He is charged with five counts of unlawful production of child pornography and five counts of unlawful possession of child pornography. Gunn is considered innocent until proven guilty.

How the case began

According to the sheriff’s office, the ICAC Unit received three Cyber Tipline reports from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. The reports originated from the artificial intelligence platform xAI, known for Grok, and involved suspected child sexual abuse material. Detectives then identified Gunn as a suspect.

“The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to identifying individuals involved in the sexual exploitation of children and holding those responsible accountable,” Sheriff Paul Burch said.

Scrutiny of the platform

Grok has been under fire and is facing multiple lawsuits from plaintiffs who claim that naked images of them were created on the platform. The company has since announced added controls to protect children.

Anyone with concerns about the online exploitation of a child can report it to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s CyberTipline at report.cybertip.org or 1-800-843-5678.
