No Local No. 1s in Final ASWA Poll, but Vigor and UMS-Wright Finish Second as 13 Area Teams Earn Recognition
Fairhope, Saraland, Gulf Shores, Williamson, McGill-Toolen, St. Michael, Bayside and Mobile Christian also made the top 10 or top five in the final rankings before the playoffs.
MOBILE, Ala. — The final Alabama Sports Writers Association prep football poll is out, and no team from the Mobile County-Baldwin County area sits at No. 1. The ASWA does not rank teams once the playoffs begin, so this is the last word until the championships are settled on the field.
The area does have two teams at No. 2: Vigor in Class 4A and UMS-Wright in Private Class AA. In all, 13 local teams are ranked or received votes.
Local teams in the final poll
- Class 6A: Fairhope is No. 7, and Daphne received votes.
- Class 5A: Saraland is No. 4 and Gulf Shores is No. 5.
- Class 4A: Vigor is No. 2 and Williamson is No. 3. Citronelle and Orange Beach received votes.
- Private Class AA: UMS-Wright is No. 2, McGill-Toolen is No. 3 and St. Michael is No. 5.
- Private Class A: Bayside Academy is No. 4 and Mobile Christian is No. 5.
The ASWA ranks only five teams in the private school classifications for the Alabama High School Athletic Association and in the Alabama Independent School Association because of the low number of schools in those groups.
The top teams
The No. 1 teams heading into the playoffs are Prattville (6A), Clay-Chalkville (5A), Scottsboro (4A), Plainview (3A), Reeltown (2A), Maplesville (1A), Briarwood Christian (Private AA), Westbrook Christian (Private A) and Patrician Academy (AISA).
