A Gulf Shores man is facing drug, theft and burglary charges after Baldwin County sheriff’s deputies discovered him with a stolen vehicle containing illegal substances during an early morning patrol.
Deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked off Fort Morgan Road in the overnight hours. Inside an apparently abandoned car, investigators say they found cocaine and marijuana. A short time later, a 27-year-old man returned to the vehicle and was taken into custody. He initially told deputies the car belonged to his brother before later claiming ownership himself, according to authorities. He was arrested on charges of second-degree possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance.
As detectives continued working the scene, deputies were also called to investigate a residential burglary nearby. A resident told officials that someone had broken into her home and stolen car keys, electronics, alcohol, food and clothing. The intruder also took her vehicle, matching the same stolen car deputies had already recovered.
Investigators later interviewed the arrested man at the Baldwin County Corrections Center in Bay Minette, where he admitted to burglarizing the residence and breaking into two vehicles in the area, according to authorities. He was additionally charged with second-degree burglary, first-degree theft and two counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle.
He remained in custody in Bay Minette with a hold and no-bond request in place as the investigation continued.
The case highlights ongoing efforts by the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office to address property crime in the fast-growing Gulf Shores area, where seasonal population swings and vacation traffic can complicate patrol coverage. Deputies say residents who notice suspicious vehicles or activity in their neighborhoods are encouraged to report it promptly, which in this case helped investigators connect the stolen vehicle to the burglary within a matter of hours.
The sheriff’s office said additional charges could still be filed as the investigation into related property crimes in the area continues.
