With the new school year approaching, a Brewton-based recovery organization is stepping in to help local families get ready.
PEIR (People Engaged In Recovery) Community Center will host a “Back-to-School Bash” on Saturday, July 25, offering students free supplies and a few end-of-summer activities before classes resume.
Rachel Glass, with PEIR, said the event is meant to make sure area students have what they need heading back into the classroom.
“We’ve got a lot of backpacks, water bottles, and school supplies to give out on this day,” Glass said. “Also, Eloise’s Beauty Shop will be on hand for free haircuts for the kids to go back to school with a fresh cut.”
Beyond the free giveaways, organizers are planning activities to keep families entertained throughout the event.
“We will have free food and a water slide for the kids,” Glass said. “This is a community event and we welcome everyone.”
PEIR Community Center is a nonprofit organization that works with people struggling with substance use to help them find recovery. Glass said giving back to the community, including through events like Saturday’s bash, is part of the organization’s broader mission.
The Brewton location currently holds Sunday evening services at 6 p.m. featuring Recovery Church.
PEIR is also planning a larger community event for August. Recovery Fest is set for Aug. 22 from 2 to 8 p.m. and will include live music from Divine Productions, water slides, food, giveaways and space for local vendors and small businesses.
