Ryan Williams, the nation’s highest-ranked unsigned football prospect and a standout at Saraland High School, entered the final stretch of a recruiting process he said he was more than ready to see end. With National Signing Day set for Feb. 9 — his 17th birthday — Williams had narrowed his choice to three programs: Alabama, Auburn and Texas A&M.
“I’m ready for it to be over,” Williams said of the decision, which consumed months of phone calls, campus visits and pressure from coaches, fans and recruiting analysts across the country. The modern recruiting process asks teenagers to weigh education, finances and the trajectory of a professional career, decisions that carry consequences well beyond a single season.
Williams’ path to this point was anything but simple. He committed to Alabama in October 2022, while Nick Saban was still leading the program, and for a time considered his college choice settled. Saban’s retirement upended those plans. Williams said he spoke with Saban directly after the announcement, and that the longtime coach encouraged him to stay the course.
“He told me Alabama is still going to be Alabama,” Williams said.
Rather than take that reassurance at face value, Williams made two trips to Tuscaloosa to meet new head coach Kalen DeBoer — one on his own initiative and a second as an official visit. Williams said he called and asked to meet DeBoer while in Birmingham for a track meet, a request DeBoer accepted without hesitation.
“He’s very down to earth, just a good human being,” Williams said of DeBoer, who also toured Mobile-area high schools to meet with coaches. “I’ve never heard anybody say anything negative about him. He has a great record — he’s lost only 12 games.”
Williams said DeBoer’s plan for his role in Alabama’s offense closely mirrored what he did at Saraland under coach Jeff Kelly, including lining up in the slot and outside and getting the ball in the run game. That familiarity mattered to a player who has drawn national attention for his versatility as a receiver.
The recruiting process was not without turbulence. Williams absorbed some of the first public criticism of his high school career when he decommitted from Alabama shortly after Saban’s retirement announcement, but he said the backlash did not shake his approach.
“I knew it was coming,” Williams said. “It’s my decision, it’s my life and I’m going to live it.”
Texas A&M remained in the mix largely because of Holmon Wiggins, the former Alabama receivers coach who joined new Aggies head coach Mike Elko’s staff and was the primary reason for Williams’ interest in College Station. But Williams canceled a planned official visit to Texas this week, a decision he described as a sign of maturity rather than indecision.
“There’s been a lot of coaching changes this cycle,” Williams said. “Most everybody who was recruiting me a month ago aren’t recruiting me now.”
With the Texas visit off the calendar, Auburn’s Hugh Freeze held Williams’ final scheduled official visit before signing day, though that trip was later scrapped as well as his decision accelerated. Williams said program stability had become one of the most important factors in his decision, alongside two others he ranked ahead of it.
“One, winning,” Williams said. “Two, the family feeling. You’ve got to want to go to your job. You don’t want it to be, ‘I’ve gotta go to practice.’ You want it to be, ‘I want to go to practice.’ Then three, the stability of the team.”
Name, image and likeness compensation was part of the conversation for a prospect of Williams’ profile — he had recently announced a partnership with Manhattan Clothing, which he said was unconnected to any school’s NIL arrangement — but he downplayed how much it factored into his final decision.
“It’s definitely something to talk about but it’s not the end all and be all,” he said. “It’s the next step. The real money is at the next stage.”
Saraland coach Jeff Kelly, who watched the process unfold up close, said Williams approached an unusually complicated recruitment with patience.
“Ryan has done a very good job throughout this process of learning about each program and getting to know the coaches,” Kelly said. “He has been very thoughtful in his approach. Recruiting can be fun at times and also stressful at times going through what it takes to make the right decision. Many factors like the (transfer) portal and retiring coaches can make it even tougher at times. His family has been there with him through this process.”
Williams Announces His Decision
Williams ended the speculation Wednesday afternoon, announcing on social media that he was recommitting to Alabama.
“Ain’t Really Leave But I’m Back,” Williams wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
The recommitment is a significant early win for DeBoer, marking his first commitment from a five-star high school recruit since taking the Alabama job. The Crimson Tide had absorbed a series of defections in the days following Saban’s retirement, including star receiver Isaiah Bond leaving for Texas, freshman safety Caleb Downs and five-star quarterback Julian Sayin both departing for Ohio State, and freshman offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor leaving for Iowa.
Williams enters signing day regarded as one of the most productive receivers in Alabama high school history. He was rated the No. 1 wide receiver prospect nationally in the 2025 class and the top overall prospect in the state before reclassifying to the 2024 class, where he is ranked the No. 5 prospect nationally and the No. 3 wide receiver, according to On3’s composite rankings.
He capped his Saraland career with a historic performance in the Spartans’ 31-28 loss to Clay-Chalkville in the Class 6A state championship game at Bryant-Denny Stadium, catching 11 passes for a Super 7-record 232 yards, including touchdown receptions of 63 and 77 yards, returning a second-half kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown and adding a 2-yard rushing score.
For his high school career, Williams totaled 4,568 yards of offense and 74 touchdowns, scoring on average once every four snaps. He finished with 198 receptions for 3,486 yards and 49 touchdowns despite regularly facing double coverage, while also rushing for 1,082 yards and 25 touchdowns on 98 carries.
Williams is again a finalist for Alabama’s Mr. Football award, to be announced next week. A win would make him the first player in state history to claim the honor in back-to-back seasons.
Williams’ recruitment drew outsized attention in part because of what it represents for South Alabama football: a homegrown, five-star talent who chose among the sport’s most prominent programs on his own terms, ultimately deciding to stay home with Alabama.
