Saraland’s season opener against Lipscomb Academy will be seen well beyond South Alabama this fall. ESPN announced this week that it will nationally televise the Aug. 25 matchup between the Spartans and the Mustangs, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. at Spartans Stadium.
For Saraland coach Jeff Kelly, the national spotlight is secondary to the challenge on the field. The Spartans enter the season fresh off a 14-1 record and their first Class 6A state championship, but Kelly has made clear that neither the television deal nor the pursuit of a repeat title is the primary motivation heading into the opener.
Lipscomb Academy brings a national pedigree of its own. The Tennessee program has won back-to-back Division II-AA state championships and five state titles overall, and enters the season ranked as high as No. 13 nationally in preseason polls with a 21-game winning streak. The Mustangs are coached by Pro Football Hall of Famer Kevin Mawae, who took over the program from Trent Dilfer, the Super Bowl-winning quarterback who left to become head coach at UAB. Lipscomb is no stranger to marquee matchups — the Mustangs beat four-time Class 7A champion Thompson 24-14 on ESPNU last season and will open this season against No. 4-ranked IMG Academy the week before facing Saraland.
“With the success they’ve had and the number of well-respected and talented players they have coming back, it’s the most challenging opponent we’ve ever opened the season with,” Kelly said.
Kelly pushed back on the idea that the game is about Saraland proving itself nationally or serving as a springboard to another title. “That may be thinking about it too deeply,” Kelly said. “It’s an opportunity to play one of the best teams in the country, to play them at home and have it broadcast by ESPN throughout the world. It’s an opportunity to showcase what the Saraland school system and the city has got going. It gives us a measuring stick going into the season, a gauge of where we’re at, and a carrot to start the season off.”
He also downplayed the idea that his players need any extra motivation given the expectations already surrounding the program. “They just love to play ball,” Kelly said. “They’re not going to get caught up in what everybody else wants us to be.”
Talk of a possible Class 6A three-peat has followed the program since it won its first state title last December, but Kelly was blunt about how difficult a repeat run would be with a largely new roster. “It’s tough to win,” he said. “Repeat is such a lie of a word. We’ll have a different team this year than we had last year. We’ll have different personnel and different leadership. It’s not about repeating, it’s about, ‘Hey, can we go get it done?’ Last year’s team got it done. This year’s team hasn’t done a thing.”
Saraland does return significant firepower, including five-star receiver Ryan Williams, the first sophomore to win the state’s Mr. Football award, four-star quarterback K.J. Lacey, four-star defensive lineman Antonio Coleman, and a roster that includes 23 potential college prospects. Williams has already committed to Alabama, Lacey to Texas, and Coleman holds offers from Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee and Penn State, among others.
Lipscomb counters with its own collection of high-level talent, led by four-star recruits defensive back Kaleb Beasley and linebacker Edwin Spillman, both committed to Tennessee, along with four uncommitted junior prospects: safety C.J. Jimcoily, offensive lineman Chauncey Gooden, quarterback Jackson Kilburg and linebacker Kris Thompson.
The matchup sets up a compelling contrast in styles. Lipscomb’s defense allowed only one touchdown across three playoff games last season, while Saraland’s offense averaged 43 points per game — a collision course that will be on display for a national television audience as well as a sold-out crowd at Spartans Stadium.
“The challenge is in getting better every day and I think we have done that,” Kelly said. “We’ve got to keep doing that.”
Saraland principal Brent Harrison framed the broadcast as recognition of a program built over years, not months. “This is not a one-year deal,” he said. “He’s worked hard for over a decade to get the program where it is today.”
Ticket demand has already reflected the anticipation surrounding the season. Saraland’s season tickets sold out shortly after going on sale. “Everybody renewed,” Kelly said. “There weren’t a lot of new tickets. They sold in the first five minutes. We didn’t have enough to go around. We could have sold a bunch more.”
This will mark Saraland’s second appearance in an ESPN broadcast. The Spartans previously played on the network in 2017, when they traveled to beat Heard County, Georgia, 17-14 in a season opener between two teams that were unranked nationally at the time. This year’s matchup, between a defending Alabama state champion and a nationally ranked Tennessee power, represents a considerably higher-profile stage for the program.
