LaShun Watson’s Late Jumpers Lift South Alabama Past North Texas for Second Straight Home Win

LaShun Watson scored South Alabama's final four points in the last 1:20 as the Jaguars beat North Texas to move to 13-10 and 6-6 in the Sun Belt.

MOBILE, Ala. — LaShun Watson hit two jumpers to score the game’s final four points in the last 1:20, and South Alabama basketball beat North Texas at the Mitchell Center for its second straight home win.

The Jaguars, coached by Ronnie Arrow, improved to 13-10 overall and evened their Sun Belt Conference record at 6-6. North Texas fell to 12-10 and 5-6.

Back-and-Forth Finish

North Texas scored the first basket, but South Alabama led for most of the first half and built an 11-point lead at the 9:38 mark. The Mean Green cut the margin to 37-34 by halftime.

North Texas stayed close after the break and pulled within one point with 14:49 remaining. South Alabama answered with a 19-3 run to go back up by 11.

The Mean Green then went on a 13-2 run to take their first lead since 25 seconds into the game, setting up Watson’s two late baskets.

Tilford Leads Scorers

Domonic Tilford scored a game-high 22 points on 6-of-15 shooting. He made 4 of 6 3-pointers and all six of his free throws. Brandon Davis added 15 points, and Watson finished with 14.

Ronald Douglas tied his career high with six blocked shots in his second game back from a shoulder injury. DeAndre Coleman fouled out early in the second half without scoring.

George Odufuwa and Eric Tramiel each scored 14 points to lead North Texas. Tramiel also had 13 rebounds for a double-double.

South Alabama plays at Western Kentucky on Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
