ATLANTA — South Alabama men’s basketball takes a 2-0 record into its Coaches vs. Cancer Classic game against Tennessee State at the Georgia State Sports Arena. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. Central (4 p.m. Eastern).
It will be the first meeting between the two programs.
Best Start Since 1996-97
The Jaguars are 2-0 for the first time since the 1996-97 season, when they finished 23-7, won the Sun Belt Conference title and earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
South Alabama beat William Carey 82-64 in its home opener at the Mitchell Center, the program’s 21st consecutive win in a home opener.
As of Nov. 16, the Jaguars were No. 4 in the RealTimeRPI ratings and No. 148 in the Sagarin ratings. Tennessee State ranked No. 262 in RPI and No. 177 in the Sagarin ratings.
Balanced Effort Against William Carey
Augustine Rubit scored a game-high 20 points against the Crusaders, 16 of them in the first half, and finished one rebound short of a double-double. Rubit is tied for fifth in the Sun Belt in scoring at 16.0 points per game.
Mychal Ammons posted his third straight double-double with 19 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Ammons leads the conference in rebounding at 12.0 per game and ranks second in field goal percentage at 66.7 percent. He is averaging 15.5 points and 8.5 rebounds over his last 11 games.
Javier Carter blocked seven shots, extending his streak of games with a block to eight. Carter leads the Sun Belt with 6.5 blocks per game.
In the second half, Antoine Allen and Xavier Roberson combined to make 6 of 7 3-point attempts.
