MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama’s scheduled football game at Florida this fall has been canceled after the Southeastern Conference announced Thursday that its members will play a 10-game, conference-only schedule in 2020.
The Jaguars had been set to play the Gators in Gainesville. Under the SEC’s revised plan, its football season will begin Sept. 26, and the SEC Championship Game will move to Dec. 19.
Following the ACC
The SEC move had been rumored for several days. It followed an announcement by the Atlantic Coast Conference that its teams will play an 11-game schedule consisting of 10 conference games and one non-conference game.
South Alabama’s Revised Schedule
With the Florida game off the schedule, South Alabama is slated to open its season against Southern Miss on Sept. 5. The Jaguars would then return to action Sept. 26 against UAB.
Both Southern Miss and UAB are members of Conference USA, which could also decide to adopt a conference-only format. The Sun Belt Conference has not announced changes to its schedule model.
Compensation Unclear
It is not yet known whether South Alabama will receive any compensation for the cancellation of the Florida game.
The 2020 season is scheduled to be South Alabama’s first in its new on-campus stadium, Hancock Whitney Stadium. Steve Campbell is entering his third season as the Jaguars’ head coach.
