MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama football will take three days off after what head coach Joey Jones called one of the team’s most spirited practices of the season Wednesday. The South Alabama football team is in the second of its three bye weeks this season.
The Jaguars return to practice Sunday evening to resume preparations for their homecoming game against Kent State on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
Jones Pleased With Defense
Jones told AL.com the defense set the tone in Wednesday’s workout.
“Defensively we came out ready to go, and that’s what we want out of them,” Jones said. “Come out – and you’ve got to have some fun. Our kids work, but you’ve also got to have some fun too. They brought that mixture of having fun and getting after it.”
Timing of the Break
Jones said he was not sure whether the open date came at a good point in the schedule and that the staff would have a better sense when players return Sunday. He reminded the team of its goals and said Kent State is a very good team that South Alabama will need to be ready for.
About three-quarters of the game plan for Kent State is in place, and the Jaguars are expected to be largely healthy by kickoff.
Homecoming Matchup
The Kent State game will be South Alabama’s first home game since a 31-24 win over Western Kentucky on Sept. 14. Kent State won the only previous meeting between the schools, 33-25, in 2011.
