MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama head football coach Joey Jones said Rush Propst and Hal Mumme were among the candidates he interviewed for the Jaguars’ offensive coordinator position, but that neither will be joining his staff.
Search Continues
Jones confirmed that Propst and Mumme were among the “seven or eight” coaches he has interviewed for the job. He declined to identify any other candidates.
Jones said he has also spoken with former Auburn offensive coordinator Tony Franklin, but that the conversation was not an interview and Franklin is not under consideration for the position.
The hire will lead the offense for South Alabama’s new football program, which is scheduled to begin play this fall at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
Propst Staying in Georgia
Propst publicly stated that he will not be leaving Colquitt County High School in Georgia for the South Alabama job, a move intended to settle questions in that community about his future.
Propst won five state championships at Hoover High School before leaving the program amid controversy in 2007. He took over at Colquitt County for the 2008 season and led the team to a 4-6 record, an improvement over its 2-8 mark the season before he arrived.
Mumme’s Background
Mumme went 11-38 in four seasons at New Mexico State and was dismissed after the 2008 season.
He is best known for his tenure at Kentucky from 1997 to 2000, where he succeeded Bill Curry and installed his “Air Raid” passing offense with quarterback Tim Couch. Mike Leach, now the head coach at Texas Tech, served as his offensive coordinator at Kentucky before leaving for Oklahoma.
Mumme’s Kentucky tenure ended with a 2-9 season in 2000 amid an investigation into NCAA rules violations involving members of his staff, and he resigned in February 2001.
South Alabama competes in the Sun Belt Conference.
