MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama football has named four seniors as permanent team captains for the 2012 season, with the players chosen by a vote of their teammates. The South Alabama football permanent team captains will be recognized along with the rest of the senior class before Saturday’s home finale against Middle Tennessee at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
Among the four captains are center Trey Clark, who has started every game in the program’s history, and Mobile native B.J. Scott.
Chosen by Teammates
Scott said being selected by his teammates carries special meaning. “It means a lot, especially coming from my peers,” he said. “It means that I have the respect of my teammates and it lets me know that they believe in me and they think highly of me. I’m just going to go out there and lead them and be the guy that they chose.”
Head coach Joey Jones called the captaincy the top honor a player can receive. “To me, that’s the highest honor you get,” Jones said. “Your stats and leading tackler in conference is big, being able to have tackles and catch passes and whatever you do stat-wise, that’s something you’ll remember. But you’ll always remember being a captain. It’s the biggest honor on the team because that’s what everybody else on the team thinks of you. They think you’re the guy to put in front of them.”
“These four guys have been great examples of leadership on our team,” Jones said. “We have others certainly on this team, but those four guys were picked by their teammates.”
Senior Day Against Middle Tennessee
Saturday’s game against the Blue Raiders is South Alabama’s final home game of 2012 and serves as Senior Day. The Jaguars, in their first season as a member of the Sun Belt Conference and the Football Bowl Subdivision, will honor their senior class in a pregame ceremony.
Jones has led the program since its inception. The Jaguars began play in 2009 and have played their home games at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile.
