MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama football returned to full-contact work Tuesday, and the Jaguars’ defense won most of the third-down red zone drills during preseason practice. Defensive back Darrow Fisher is reported to be out for the season with a torn ACL suffered in Saturday’s scrimmage.
Camp Schedule
The Jaguars opened preseason camp with nine straight days of practice that ended with Saturday’s scrimmage. After an off day Sunday, the team practiced for two hours in shells on Monday, with the final hour devoted to offense against defense despite the absence of full pads.
Jones Sees Corrections
Head coach Joey Jones said Monday’s workout showed progress on the offensive side.
“Offensively, I thought that we came out with a little more spirit today. I saw some good leadership there, and the coaches were coaching harder, I really liked what I saw on that side of the ball this morning,” Jones said.
“I saw a great attitude today. Actually, when we came out here you could see that some of the things that were mistakes on the film [from Saturday’s scrimmage] were actually fixed, and I thought it might take two or three days to do that,” he added. “We still have more to work on, because the challenge is they have to be better by Saturday than they are today. If they take that attitude they will be able to accomplish that.”
Red Zone Drills
In Tuesday’s third-down red zone period, the defense broke up four passes and held the offense to 2 yards or fewer on 14 of 18 snaps.
Enrique Williams recorded a sack on the fifth play of the drill. On the next snap, C.J. Bennett threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Bryant Lavender.
The defense then allowed 4 yards over the next five plays before Raymond Cotton scored on an 8-yard run. The offense did not gain positive yardage on the final six plays of the drill, three of which ended in pass breakups.
Fisher Injury
Fisher, a defensive back, is reported to have torn his anterior cruciate ligament during Saturday’s scrimmage and is expected to miss the 2010 season.
