MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama football practice resumed Monday after a Sunday off, as the Jaguars opened their second full week of preseason camp 16 days before their season opener against Texas-San Antonio.
Head coach Joey Jones said the team responded well to the rest day.
“I thought it was great, it was one of our better practices,” Jones said. “The kids came out ready to go and were mentally sharp. I told them that if we can practice like this, we’re going to be a pretty good football team. But we have to continue to do that.”
Inside the Practice
The Jaguars worked about two hours in full pads. Most of the first hour was spent on individual drills, followed by skeleton passing and then full 11-on-11 team work in the second half. Skeleton work concentrated on open-field and red-zone plays, while the team period focused on the base offense.
Sophomore quarterback C.J. Bennett completed passes to four different receivers on the first four plays of team drills. Bennett and Ross Metheny both worked behind an offensive line that allowed two sacks in team drills.
Jereme Jones made a one-handed touchdown catch, and wide receivers Cameron Broadnax and T.J. Glover also made several catches. Kendall Houston and senior Brandon Ross worked among the running backs in individual drills.
On defense, safety Charles Harris broke up two passes during skeleton drills, and safety B.J. Scott was vocal on the field. Former South Alabama receiver Courtney Smith visited practice.
Review of Saturday’s Scrimmage
The staff reviewed video of Saturday’s scrimmage, and Jones said he was pleased with the results.
“I thought there were some good things offensively. We executed much better, the offensive line is really starting to come along and the quarterbacks understand the offense,” he said. “Defensively we are real banged up right now, a bunch of starters are out but will be back by the middle of the week.”
A Work Week
Jones said the second week of camp, with no classes and no game, is meant for heavy repetitions.
“We’re going to finish this week getting a ton of reps, next week we will start backing off and focusing on quality reps,” Jones said.
The Jaguars practice at 7:40 a.m. each day this week leading up to an 8 a.m. scrimmage Saturday at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. South Alabama begins its first Sun Belt Conference football season this fall.
