South Alabama Softball Earns No. 2 Seed in Sun Belt Tournament, Seeks Third Straight Title

South Alabama is the No. 2 seed behind Louisiana-Lafayette in the 2014 Sun Belt softball tournament and opens Thursday at 2 p.m. as it seeks a third straight title.

MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama softball is the No. 2 seed in the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship Tournament, where the Jaguars will try to win their third consecutive tournament title.

Louisiana-Lafayette earned the No. 1 seed. The top two seeds received byes through the first two rounds and will open play in the third round.

Tournament Format

The tournament is single elimination on the first day and switches to a double-elimination format beginning on the second day. The championship round on Saturday may require two games.

  • 1. Louisiana-Lafayette
  • 2. South Alabama
  • 3. Georgia State
  • 4. Western Kentucky
  • 5. Texas State
  • 6. Louisiana-Monroe
  • 7. Troy
  • 8. UT Arlington

Georgia State and Western Kentucky received first-round byes and will begin play in the second round.

Wednesday

  • Game 1, 10 a.m. — No. 6 Louisiana-Monroe vs. No. 7 Troy
  • Game 2, 12:30 p.m. — No. 5 Texas State vs. No. 8 UT Arlington
  • Game 3, 3 p.m. — No. 3 Georgia State vs. Game 1 winner
  • Game 4, 5:30 p.m. — No. 4 Western Kentucky vs. Game 2 winner

Thursday

  • Game 5, 2 p.m. — No. 2 South Alabama vs. Game 3 winner
  • Game 6, 5 p.m. — No. 1 Louisiana-Lafayette vs. Game 4 winner

Friday and Saturday

  • Game 7, Friday, 11 a.m. — Game 5 loser vs. Game 6 loser (elimination)
  • Game 8, Friday — Game 5 winner vs. Game 6 winner
  • Game 9, Friday, 5 p.m. — Game 7 winner vs. Game 8 loser (elimination)
  • Championship, Saturday, 3 p.m. — first of up to two games

South Alabama won the Sun Belt tournament championship in each of the past two seasons.
