South Alabama Can Clinch Bowl Eligibility at Southern Miss After Handing Louisiana First Sun Belt Loss

South Alabama (5-5) can clinch bowl eligibility Saturday at struggling Southern Miss (1-9), a week after beating previously unbeaten-in-league Louisiana-Lafayette.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — South Alabama can become bowl eligible for the third consecutive season with a win Saturday at Southern Miss, one week after becoming the first Sun Belt Conference team this season to beat Louisiana-Lafayette.

The Jaguars (5-5, 4-2 Sun Belt) won in Lafayette last week, handing the Ragin’ Cajuns their first conference loss and keeping South Alabama’s hopes for a West Division title alive. A sixth win would make South Alabama bowl eligible in Major Applewhite’s first season as head coach.

Southern Miss (1-9, 0-6 Sun Belt) has lost eight consecutive games and has scored three points in each of its last two, losing 37-3 to Marshall and 58-3 to Texas State. The Golden Eagles’ lone win came against FCS opponent Southeastern Louisiana, 35-10.

South Alabama is a 22.5-point favorite and is 4-0 all-time against Southern Miss. The game will be played at M.M. Roberts Stadium, known as The Rock.

Southern Miss Under Interim Coach Reed Stringer

Southern Miss dismissed head coach Will Hall the day after a 44-28 home loss to Arkansas State. Hall went 14-30 at Southern Miss. Since the coaching change, the Golden Eagles have scored 21 total points in three games.

Reed Stringer is serving as interim head coach. Stringer was in his fourth season as assistant head coach and general manager and his seventh year overall in the program. He joined the Southern Miss staff in 2018 under Jay Hopson as an offensive quality control coach, began coaching tight ends in 2019 and remained through the 2020 season, when Hopson stepped down and the program had three head coaches. He stayed on staff after Hall was hired. Before Southern Miss, Stringer spent seven seasons at Louisiana-Lafayette as assistant head coach, recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach.

Southern Miss will honor two seniors on senior day Saturday.
