MOBILE, Ala. — The University of South Alabama has launched its campaign for the 2026 Mobile Heart Walk, benefiting the research and advocacy work of the American Heart Association.

The main walk takes place Saturday, Nov. 7, 2026, beginning at 8 a.m. outside the USA Mitchell Center.

The Goal

University leadership unveiled a participation target of more than 20 registered teams across the University and USA Health.

A team-based goal rather than a dollar goal is a meaningful choice. Teams recruit participants who would not sign up individually, and a department or unit that forms one typically brings along people who have no prior connection to the cause. Twenty teams across a university and a health system represents broad institutional participation rather than concentrated giving from a few sources.

What Leadership Said

President Jo Bonner and Executive Vice President and Provost Dr. Andi Kent framed the effort in regional terms in a joint statement.

“The Heart Walk represents one of the most impactful ways our University community comes together to serve a cause larger than ourselves,” they said. “Heart disease touches nearly every family in the Gulf Coast region. By rallying our faculty, staff, healthcare professionals and students, we are demonstrating our commitment to advancing medical breakthroughs and fostering a culture of health across Mobile and surrounding communities.”

The observation about the Gulf Coast is supported by the data. Alabama consistently ranks among the states with the highest rates of cardiovascular disease mortality, and the Southeast as a region carries a disproportionate burden of heart disease, stroke, hypertension and diabetes.

A Walk, Not a Race

The annual event is noncompetitive, combining fitness and philanthropy.

It brings together corporate teams, individual participants, survivors of heart disease and stroke, and community advocates. Participants walk to encourage healthier lifestyle habits while raising funds to combat cardiovascular disease and stroke.

The noncompetitive format is central to the event’s design. A timed race selects for people who already run; a walk includes people recovering from cardiac events, people with limited mobility, families with small children and colleagues who have no athletic interest whatsoever. For an organization whose message is that modest physical activity matters, the format is the message.

The presence of survivors is the other defining feature. Heart Walks typically include visible recognition of participants who have experienced a cardiac event or stroke, which turns an abstract cause into people standing in the crowd.

The Community Engagement Argument

“Our partnership with the American Heart Association reflects South’s deeply rooted mission of promoting discovery, health and learning,” said Vice President of Community Engagement Joél Billingsley. “Every dollar raised, and every step taken by our team members directly aids the American Heart Association’s efforts to improve overall cardiovascular health and reduce premature deaths from stroke and heart disease throughout our region.”

The university’s combined efforts align with the American Heart Association’s broader initiatives to expand cardiovascular health awareness and reduce mortality rates nationwide.

Why a University and Health System Pairing Matters

USA Health is the clinical arm of the University of South Alabama and the region’s academic health system, which puts the institution on both sides of this cause.

Its clinicians treat heart attacks and strokes in the region’s hospitals. Its researchers and medical students work in the fields the American Heart Association funds. And its faculty and staff constitute a large employer whose workforce is subject to the same cardiovascular risk factors as the rest of the population.

A fundraising campaign run across both the university and the health system reaches thousands of employees at once — which is the practical reason institutional campaigns of this kind are effective.

The Heart Walk Model

The American Heart Association operates Heart Walks in hundreds of communities nationally, and they are among the organization’s primary fundraising vehicles.

The structure — workplace teams, a fall date, a short noncompetitive route, a survivor recognition component — is consistent across markets, which lets local organizers focus on recruitment rather than event design. Funds raised support research grants, public education, advocacy for policies affecting cardiovascular health, and CPR and emergency cardiovascular care training programs.

That last category has a direct local connection. Bystander CPR training and public access to defibrillators are among the most immediately consequential applications of Heart Association work, and they determine outcomes in cardiac arrests that occur in homes, workplaces and public spaces.
