Family Promise of Baldwin County Rebrands Annual Benefit as A Night of Promise, Set for Dec. 3 in Daphne
Family Promise of Baldwin County’s 19th Annual Benefit, formerly A Chocolate Affair, returns as A Night of Promise on Dec. 3 at the Daphne Civic Center, adding a live auction, cake auction and new sponsorships.
DAPHNE, Ala. — Family Promise of Baldwin County is giving its biggest fundraiser of the year a new name and a new look, announcing that its 19th Annual Benefit will be held as A Night of Promise on Thursday, Dec. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Daphne Civic Center.
For years, the event was known across the Eastern Shore as A Chocolate Affair. The nonprofit said in a news release that the reimagined evening will carry a fresh name and visual identity, along with new features intended to draw the community together in support of local families who are struggling to keep a roof over their heads.
While the branding is changing, several core details are staying the same. Tickets are still $75 per person, and the organization expects roughly 320 guests to attend.
What’s New at A Night of Promise
The most visible additions to this year’s benefit are two auctions. Family Promise said the evening will include a live auction as well as a cake auction, giving guests new ways to participate and contribute to the cause during the event.
The organization is also rolling out expanded sponsorship opportunities. According to the release, those options are aimed at businesses, organizations and community partners that want to support Family Promise’s mission while being recognized at the benefit.
Highlights announced so far include:
- A new event name, A Night of Promise, replacing A Chocolate Affair
- A new visual identity for the 19th Annual Benefit
- A live auction
- A cake auction
- Expanded sponsorship opportunities for businesses, organizations and community partners
At charity events, a live auction typically features an auctioneer calling for bids from the room on a series of donated items or experiences, with the highest bidder taking each lot home and the proceeds going to the host organization. A cake auction follows a similar format, with donated cakes, often made by local bakers or community members, placed up for bid. Both formats tend to add energy to an evening and give guests a hands-on way to contribute beyond the price of a ticket.
Family Promise said more information about auction items, cake participants, sponsors, entertainment and other event details will be released in the months leading up to Dec. 3.
Leaders Say the Mission Stays at the Center
Beth Biggs, executive director of Family Promise of Baldwin County, said the people the organization helps remain the reason for the gathering.
“At the heart of this event are the families we serve,” Biggs said in the release. “A Night of Promise brings our community together around the belief that families deserve safety, stability and the support they need to move forward.”
Lillian Norris, the organization’s director of development and marketing, said the changes were designed to create a fresh experience for guests without drifting from the group’s purpose.
“We wanted to create an event that feels fresh, elevated and engaging while never losing sight of why we are gathering,” Norris said. “The new identity, auctions and sponsorship opportunities are designed to invite even more of our community into the mission.”
Norris’ comments point to one of the practical goals behind the rebrand: broadening the circle of people and businesses who take part. Auctions give attendees a direct way to give during the evening, while sponsorship packages open the door for companies and civic groups that may want to support the work in a more visible way.
Where the Money Goes
Proceeds from A Night of Promise will help fund the full range of services Family Promise of Baldwin County provides. According to the organization, that includes:
- Shelter
- Housing assistance
- Homelessness prevention
- Case management
- Rental assistance
- Other services for families experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity
The organization said those programs are aimed at helping families move from crisis toward long-term stability. The benefit specifically supports local families with children who are experiencing homelessness and housing instability.
That focus on families with children is a defining feature of the Family Promise approach. Homelessness among families often looks different from the images many people associate with the word. A family may be staying temporarily with relatives, moving between motels, sleeping in a vehicle or facing an eviction notice after a job loss, medical bill or other financial shock. Services such as case management and rental assistance are meant to address those situations before they become worse, or to help a family rebuild once the immediate crisis has passed.
About Family Promise
Family Promise of Baldwin County is a local affiliate of Family Promise, a national nonprofit network that began in New Jersey in the 1980s and has since grown to include affiliates in communities across the United States. The national organization focuses on preventing and ending homelessness for families with children, and its affiliates have traditionally worked closely with local congregations, volunteers and community partners.
Each affiliate is locally run and tailors its services to the needs of its own community. In Baldwin County, the organization’s work spans emergency shelter as well as prevention and longer-term support, as reflected in the list of services the benefit will fund.
The 19th Annual Benefit designation also reflects how long the fundraiser has been part of the local calendar. Under its previous name, A Chocolate Affair, the event became a familiar fixture for supporters in Baldwin County, and the organization is now carrying that tradition forward under a new banner.
Why Housing Stability Matters in Baldwin County
Baldwin County is one of Alabama’s fastest-growing counties, stretching from the Eastern Shore communities of Spanish Fort, Daphne and Fairhope to inland towns such as Robertsdale and Bay Minette and down to the beach cities of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Growth can bring jobs and investment, but it can also put pressure on the availability and cost of housing, especially for working families with tight budgets.
For a family living paycheck to paycheck, a single unexpected expense can lead to a missed rent payment, and a missed rent payment can lead to the loss of housing. Programs focused on homelessness prevention and rental assistance are designed to step in at that point, helping families stay housed rather than entering shelter. Case management, meanwhile, typically helps families set goals, connect with resources and work toward steady housing over time.
Family Promise has framed A Night of Promise as a chance for the broader community to invest in that work. As the release put it, the reimagined event will bring the community together in support of local families with children experiencing homelessness and housing instability.
